It would be great if you could post photos of the room as you currently have it furnished. But to use the current photo as an example, everything in this photo is one color, except for that little rug with some red in it. So it's monotone, dull, boring.

The easiest way you could bring more life into the room is to bring in plants, getting your green, getting some height into the room instead of everything one level. Art is another great way to bring in some interest.

You can put an area rug over your carpet. It should include colors from your walls, carpet and furniture plus a couple of bright accents. That will help visually tie everything together.

Other things that make a space look cozy are people-level lighting (floor lamps and end tables with lamps) and art hung at eye level. What would really add character is a wood floor, something to think about when the carpet needs replaced.
