1908 Living room layout
Hi all,
We recently moved into an old home with a beautiful, but small living room. We frequently host friends and family for dinner and would love to update/rearrange seating in the living room so we can have everyone comfortably seated. We also want to make sure the style flows between the entranceway through to the kitchen at the back of the house. The kitchen was just remodeled last year and we love the design (no kitchen changes), we also will not be repainting the entraceway (too difficult and we love the color!). We are open to purchasing new living room and dining room futurniture and light fixtures over the next year or two and trying to think through our overall design. A few questions we're considering and would appreciate input on. Pictures of the entire first floor for context.
Living room layout:
-Would a small sectional fit without seeming too bulky? What other options besides a sectional do we have that would seat 6 adults but not block our pathways through the room?
-Should we remove the coffee table and have very small side tables along the couches/chairs?
If we get rid of the coffee table, where else besides the wall with the large window would you put chairs?
Living room/1st floor design:
We want it to feel warm and welcoming (love the natural wood tones throughout the house. Wish the previous owners didn't paint the trim, but oh well...). Open to painting the living room and dining room if needed. Inspiration picture at the bottom!
-How can we make the living room brighter? What light fixtures would you reccomend?
-The entranceway is a cream color, the dining room is gray. Does the blue work in the living room? Should we paint it the cream color of the entraceway?
-If we went with the cream color, would it clash with the gray dining room and white/green kitchen?
-What color furniture and rugs would work in the room if we left if blue? Or if we painted it cream?

-Entrance is on the west side of the house. Large picture window in living room faces west. Dining room faces north. Kitchen faces east/south.

2 years agoYour living room seems very cluttered to me. You have a lot of seating. Do you need it all for everyday use? If not, I'd replace some of your dining room chairs with upholstered chairs that would work as seating in the living room when you have a lot of guests and remove a bunch of the chairs in the living room. I might put one or two (maybe the green ones?)next to a small table (the one blocking your bookcase, maybe) in your front hall, unless you don't have the room. It's hard to tell. Certainly replacing the chairs at the head of your dining room with upholstered would give you 2 chairs to add to your living room when needed, without the clutter of all the chairs there, now.
In short, I would go with flexible seating for crowds/guests and more open space for every day use.
I would not do a sectional. If you do think it is what you want, game it out with boxes to make sure it fits.

PRO2 years agoIf you want the room brighter, the easiest fix would be to get rid of the navy blue walls. Put a rug on the floor that reflects light.
Additionally, the living room would appear brighter if it wasn't next to a dining room that has a brightness comparable to an operating room! Tone down your overly-lit dining room. You're eating dinner, not performing surgery.
