I don't think there's any point in having cabinets so tall that you can't reach the top shelf without using a ladder, and the proportions don't look right when the upper cabinets are really tall. Look at the picture below. These aren't 10 foot ceilings, so yours would not be this close to the ceiling. I think they look fine.

Why do a bar and then make it look like it belongs in the kitchen?

Do something more creative so that it relates to your furnishings, not the kitchen.

Thanks for the ideas and images. Not a fan of the glass doors. I think it will look busy with all the glasses, bottles etc. I know everyone says the cabinets up to top of 10' ceilings won't be used but we are actually using all of ours in the kitchen for storage (holiday dishes, extra plates etc).

But you are making a bar area not an extension of your kitchen. Use bar type cabinets not kitchen type cabinets.

I may be messy but I don’t quite get the usefulness of a beverage bar, coffee bar, etc without a water source.

I agree with Valinta - would be best to make this a wet bar especially if it will also act as a coffee/beverage station.

Really appreciate all the input - you've helped solve our dilemna! We like the more simple idea to leave the large white crown molding that is in the entire great room and put the bar cabinets under it. We are not putting in a bar sink since we had one for over 20 years in another house and never used it. We would have rather had a solid counter. The kitchen sink is not far away and a pitcher of water can be next to ice bucket if needed.
