WHY?! Master Closet Gone So Wrong

I feel this picture is worth many thousand of words. So much space….who designed this atrocity?! Where do i begin to fix it / maximize the potential!?

What do you like or don't like?

Looks like it was designed by someone that owned a lot of dresses or hung their pants straight and not folded.

What do you need to store and how do you like to store it?

How many people need to use this closet?

The section sticking out in the middle does look strange, but they did end up with more hanging space by doing that. As chispa says, you need to know what your needs are before you know how to configure a closet. If you're moving into this house, hopefully you can measure what you have now, inches of short hanging, inches of long hanging, inches of shelf space and shoe space required. Then you can compare that to what is in this closet and figure out how to bridge the gaps. If it's obvious which closet system they used when they put this together (label anywhere?) maybe you can use the same manufacturer, swap out some sections and get a seamless look without trashing the whole thing. If that manufacturer offers assistance with configuration and it's in your budget, use their help as their familiarity with their products will make it easier for them to get you what you want.

The dentist office lighting hurts the eyes but the rest looks pretty normal- nice even. As everyone else stated you need to think about your needs and what doesn’t work here.

One good thing I see - the pull down closet rod. You have nice high ceilings - that helps you use up high with out a step stool and then you can have shelves or drawers below. So many questions.

Your best bet would be to start with dimensions, some more pictures and then taking note of how many linear feet of shirt/pant hanging, Long dress hanging, suit hanging, folded storage ( shelves ) , delicates drawers, jewelry drawers, specialty storage ( ties, bags, shoes, scarves etc ) .

Once you have that, then you can start to come up with a plan.

it does seem to be heavy on hanging space and short on shoe storage. Do you have dressers elsewhere for folded clothes? At least there is lots of room to reconfigure and you have great advice above on how to determine what you want.

Good luck - post your outcome!

call in a professional closet company. I used California Closets for my master closet redo. They were amazing. they view your clothing and design the closet to your needs. Worth every penny.

Those ridiculous bumpouts should be removed, that thing in the middle, all the wasted storage space! up high, put in some wide shelves to store your luggage.

And that horrible lighting! It's like a auto garage!

You could have a nice little 'island' with drawers on all sizes for lingerie or whatever.

trust me, call in a pro company, spend the money. you'll have an amazing closet. (if that's what you want. And, you can spend as little or as much as you want. they have diff prices)

    construction. it's about 14' long, 7' wide

**tip- buy your OWN hardware and skip their upcharge.

for my top I got my own remnant quartz piece and had it installed. total-$300.

We never put built in drawers in our master closet. Instead we just used dressers. Less expensive, and more flexible if your needs change over the years.

the best thing about my closet is the drawers. the drawers are great for under-clothing, sweaters, exercise-wear, or the shallow drawers can be used for accessories. I also have a dresser near the bed, but don't even use it.

I agree with Beth. There are many closet companies out there. We also used California Closet for my DD’s apartment, but used a family run business here in Florida.

Hopefully they can retrofit drawers and shelves that are specific to your needs.

I used an IKEA closet system for my walk in closet. I never looked back! It’s still in great shape 25 years later, with all the bells and whistles for all my needs.

That’s a lot of hanging rods with no consideration for shoes, sweaters, etc. Calling in a professional closet company is absolutely worth it because you have the space but a weird use of it. It’s utilized in a slightly psychotic manner.

    Call the pros.

Closet heaven! A bench will fit & a dresser.

There’s a ton of space / corners to the left too. The hanging spot in the middle is awful, and everything drags along the ground. Love the high ceilings (changed those lights within 24 hours), but why would they not have a 3rd tier!? And the pull down?! Heinous. I like animal print, Hollywood glam…functionality wise i like to be able to see everything. Nothing folded….i wish this was a closet system. The wood was all mildew smelling and cracking covered with about 2 inches of dust. I had it painted just a basic white / champagne + killz for now. I was thinking get rid of the random middle piece (and the mirror? With approx 9 inches of space in front!?) —- all the rods are just too short to categorize anything without it looking “smushed” / too full. Middle thing goes, replace carpet with tile, add a 3rd tier — then i can have a nice cozy sitting area or area for purses….really just so overwhelmed i haven’t made it that far. I have about 100 pairs of thigh high boots. Admittedly a huge problem with clothes in general, but they make me happy. I just want this closet to reflect a happy place instead of a couple that fought over space. (There were very random odd things nailed in to the wall too) it’s just for me….i suppose a ladder will obviously be needed? Some beaded chandelier type fixtures? Again, I’m truly grateful for the space itself. I just wish it had been utilized more in line with something i could build off of….so right now my focus is making this digestible without imploding 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫

    @Beth H. Ooohhh the leopard I’m dying!!!!!

@happyleg - where would you fit a bench!? Or dresser!?

These were some of my favorite!

What you need and like sounds pretty far from what you've got. I can't imagine anyone else needing to store 100 pair of thigh-high boots!

Maybe just rip the whole thing out and start over with a professional closet company.

I'm a bit unclear. Did you move? You have posts on other topics back to 2022.

The closet is new,? The house is new? Where have your clothes been since 2022?

I second using a professional closet company, which will also have you make an inventory list of your clothes, footwear, purses, etc. We used Inspired Closets and are very happy with the results.

First you sit down and figure out what you have to put there . Do you collect shoes ? Then major shoe storage. Do you have long gowns they need hanging space . Closets IMO are designed to fit your wardrobe. Do you share the space ? Is this your home ? You need help from a professional but I think a closet company will not help you make this work . Maybe a n interior designer who does this for clients .I just went down ad read about your boots IMO you start there . I think if there was mildew problem then there is water getting in there somewhere and you better find out the source of that for sure. I think by the time you redo this space it would be beeter to just rip it all out and start over. I like a closet to have really good lighting since this is where you put colors together accessories added all need good daylight type lighting. I do not like tee shirts hung on hangaers i do like haning space that allows my clothes to not be scrunched together/ I have 6 long dresses that need that space . My shoes are aon a rack to the ceiling . You need a proper closet designer to do this if you are not up to it. But please find out about that mildew or all your clothes will stink.

Would suggest you hire a closet designer/company. Am doubting they would want to salvage much or any of what is in the closet now but they should be able to work with you to give you exactly the closet you want.

I think the pro closet people will know how to deal with your boot collection. Just let them know you’re a lover of pink and leopard carpeting too.

@jan moyer- yes, sorry for the lack of clarity! I moved from an 800 sq foot apartment to a 3000 townhome!! Got myself in way over my head
