We took the surround off the other day and I am heartbroken that they chipped away the Chicago brick!! Now we're exploring ideas on how to add some character back to the fireplace. We want to keep it woodburning. We had it inspected and cleaned and it's in great shape inside!

Sorry but a beautiful mantel will still look great with the brick that's left and a nice mosaic tile or stone slab

With a wood burning fireplace, you’ll get ash on the hearth, so go gray or dark there. It will be pretty once you add tile or something around the brick. What will you do with the floors?

The floors are too badly damaged to be refinished, so we are having them replaced with new red oak. We need to pick out a tile for the hearth still.

Hi Jaime, I love the ideal of exposing the brick! I would reccomend leaving a vertical 1/2" wide x 3/4" deep gap between the drywall and the brick for the change in material. If you paint the back of the gap black, it will disappear and you will be left with a clean slide by transition as opposed to two uneven materials banging into each other. You can see in the image below how we left a horizontal reveal at the top and bottom of the stone fireplace wall. Hope this helps!

Update: We ended up applying thin bricks because the bricks behind the drywall had been chipped away at.

Looks great. Now you just need some finishing touches with the hearth and accessories.
