I think the cedar ceilings are beautiful, and bring a nice organic feel into the space. The color tones of the ceiling should be the guide for the color palette in the house, in my opinion. That is one direction you could go for your home, a kind of soft low contrast look that lets the view be the star.

White flooring will give you a high contrast look, and yes those floors will show everything. We had white tile in our veterinary practice so that it would show everything and we could keep it immaculate. I used a sandy color tile in our house with pets and it was easier to keep looking good. If you go toward a light to medium tone in the beige to cream family I think it would work better. Once you have that choice made, I would look at cabinet colors that work with that feeling.

The ceiling feels like a lid. Keep the beams, paint between and deepen your floor.

I'd re think tile totally. An engineered floor......wood. White oak or sand on site! Medium light. Kinder to your back and especially in the kitchen where prolonged standing tend to take place. Bedrooms? An area rug, appropriate to room size over same flooring and you will have flooring unity!! Everywhere. Feels larger, is once and done.

You're worried about water? Even a luxury vinyl plank is better than tile.

I think it is variegated enough that it would do some concealing. I think black shows things more, I had ebonized wood before, and a black floor in the kitchen and we have tended to give them a quick clean every day.

My feeling is that just because you have a floor that conceals dirt, the dirt is still there. If you have to give it a quick dust or wipe frequently, you are keeping it cleaner to begin with and tracking things around less. It takes literally minutes a day.

That said, ceramic floors are going to be hard on your joints, and anything you drop on them is going to break. I don't know if there is luxury vinyl tile in a subtle pattern like you have chosen, if there is, I would consider that as an option. So many of the luxury vinyl products are just too "active" for my liking, and ugly in my opinion. Why more manufacturers don't make some that are subtle, I don't know.

I would not paint the ceiling.

Ceiling is staying as is. Kitchen island cabinets will colour match the ceiling and cabinets on walls will be a warm grey.
Tile feels like the most appropriate. We have had dark wood floors in the past - they did show everything. Vinyl plank doesn’t give the warmth of real wood floors and if we went with wood floors it would feel like a cabin in the woods!

Have you looked at terrazzo tile? The chips in terrazzo may be a bit more forgiving in appearance, and would be period appropriate in a house of this style

In MCM homes I think of slate when I think of tile. There are porcelain look alikes which are very practical. You don't need to get charcoal gray, think medium gray. I put that in my primary bath a couple years ago and love it. It also looks good with natural wood. Light tile floors make me think of Florida.

Yes, slate look would be beautiful! We like a concrete type look as well. In floor heating is a no brainer. We are in northern Canada.

I cringe at the idea of tile in this home. You have such an incredilbe warm vibe going on. Tile is harsh, cold, horrific on joints. Makes sense in a tropical climate. Not in yours.

I’d take a long time to search inspiration pics of homes with ceilings like yours. I’d bet there is the perfect shade of wood flooring that keeps this from looking like a log cabin, is contemporary, yet warm feeling.

These houses were designed when lots of people were using vinyl floors and wall to wall carpet, terrazzo and tile. Things that were not trying to look like stone or wood. They just looked like themselves. The ceilings were the wood element in the room

Now that everyone wants wood floors or wood look floors or stone floors that are busy, the stained wood ceilings become a "problem" that they shouldn't be.

Absolutely! A simple floor to showcase the ceiling is what we are after. We are pretty much set on tile - I’m most worried about how light it is and if I will be forever cleaning. In floor heating will go in all the tiled areas. Carpet is making a come back in the bedrooms and front sunken living room with flagstone fireplace. Masculine, 60’s-70’s vibe with leather, teak and books as decor is our look.
