Kid Bedroom Closet Redesign

One of our bedrooms has a 12' wide closet with 6' double bypass door in the middle that makes the sides extremely difficult to utilize with any regularity. Currently it's one 12' wide rod / shelf above, but seeking to add some drawers / flat storage. Floorplan and 3d rendering of the room is below.

We're open to completely opening up the wall to start (and not concerned about relocating the electrical / HVAC return that are on the left). We have considered a few options, but seeking opinions as both my wife and I are design challenged to begin with, but great at actually executing.

Some options we've talked about:

  1. built-in drawers on either side of the existing doors
  2. opening up the full 12' span, and building a 4' wide hutch of drawers in the middle with a 4'w hanging closet on each side covered by a 4' wide barndoor-type door that could slide in front of the drawers
  3. opening to the right side and putting in a 9' w triple bypass
  4. opening fully and using a 12'w quad bypass type door system

Other thoughts???

Thanks!

Built ins are always nice. I like the idea of drawers on one side--how about a book shelf on the other. If you start over you could shift the closet to one side and put in a built in desk.

It's a kids room. Depends how much you need, whether is needs to be hidden or you want display. You've got a slope....

Easy DIY.... to the height of the existing closet

I doubt you need 12" of "built in...." Buy good drawer bases as you'd use in a kitchen, any style/color/stain you want.Match the closet doors. Paint is probably easiest: ) and it's a lot of storage.

Backs on the closet doors? More storage! depending gender of the user. Even a full length mirror on one.

This is a kids closet? I would just look at taking those doors off and getting some bifolds that open the whole space at one time , Then I guess we need to know boys or girls . I found with our boys they needed a tone of dresser type storage but not much hanging space so we did dressers in the closet with a hanging rod above and it seemed to have worked well. Girls on the other hand need lots of hanging space sometimes even long hanging space and double and drawers.. I need a bit more info please. If you plan to open the whole wall then I would suggest you check out Pax from Ikea to put together for a really custom look and design.

You have registers on the left wall. HVAC would need to be moved, or will be blocked, if you expand the entire width of your wall.

    Wow - great suggestions already!

It's a young boy's room, and the closet is underutilized for all the hang space, which is why we were looking at drawers. We currently use the back sections for winter coat storage and the like.

The nook above the closet does have a light for upglow effect (we're the 2nd owners - didn't design as is). Haven't thought about a desk, but might be nice. He's almost 4 and we're migrating to a full size bed now, but a desk might be nice in a couple years.

Jan - appreciate the sketch. Had been looking at using something like a linen cabinet, but love the idea of a kitchen drawer base.

ptreckel - correct, would have to move the HVAC, but it's a return, and can be easily redirected into the adjacent wall (for some reason it actually comes up that wall on the left to begin with, then 90s under the floor into the closet front.
