It won’t look so overwhelming with furniture in there. Buy an eye catching rug if you don’t have one - lots on sale for the holiday weekend. Don’t go high end, since this isn’t your forever home - unless you find something fabulous.

In your photo, the floors are the only piece worth highlighting, and not liking something doesn’t make it dated. But since you don’t like the floors, embrace the idea of rugs. Rugs and furniture will cover large swaths and your eye will stop going straight to it (which empty, it’s the only place to look)

I would get peel and stick backsplash tile and cover that

The floors are the best part but I agree after furniture is in add rugs where they seem to work. Add some great art on the walls and really just draw your eye somehwere else .I have no idea what the comment about peel and stick anyhwere makes sense and for sure not on those floors .

You could look at a floating click-lock floor to go over the existing floor - one that you could disassemble and take with you when you move. I just bought some nice vinyl click-lock flooring at a big box store on sale for about $2.30 a square foot. Haven’t installed it yet. It’s very rigid. You would have to consider whether or not it would scratch the existing floor, installation, spacers/baseboards/shoe moulding, and whether or not disassembly is clean, but I doubt it would hurt the existing floor if it doesn’t scratch. Might be more of a project that you want, but if you really hate the existing floors, it’s an option. Always good to know your options.

I'm not sure what you mean by "modernize" the space.

If you're just renting you don't want to spend any $$ on anything you can't take with you when you leave. Also, your landlord will need to approve anything of substance you do.

What I would do is purchase rugs to cover the floor--get sea grass or jute. They are fairly inexpensive and work with any style you have now or in the future.

Or if you want to spend more, get a very good quality hand-knotted rug with a lot of colors in it. This way you can use whatever colors you like in the rug for your decor.

love those quirky floors - if it were me, I would go uber simple with everything else and let them be the star

You might find it helpful to spend some time on a site that has a rug visualizer. I looked on

Rugs Direct at a few jute rugs and didn't find a color that worked well (on my monitor) with the color of the walls, floor and island. When I looked at patterns, some fight more than others with the floor as you can see below. If you have furniture already, maybe that will help give you direction. No doubt there are choices out there that will work, but it might take some digging.

Just to be clear the peel and stick suggestions is for that busy dated backsplash not the floors! As that would be super expensive for a rental and even damage floors

Other renter friendly things you can do

• change out the fan ( store it so you can put it back when you leave)

• wrap the fridge to make it look stainless steel or black or do something colorful with removable contact paper

You can install a new vinyl floor directly over the old flooring.

Thank you all for your suggestions! I was definitely erring towards lots of rugs to cover up the space. I think the consensus is right, once the furniture gets in there and I put stuff on the walls, it shouldn’t bother me as much. I’m gonna try to embrace these floors though! 😊

What are your floors made of? If wood????? No way I would put vinyl on them. If vinyl, they are far better than any gray lip that looks fake. Your floors go with your kitchen wood very well.
