Kitchen Table Amiss?

last modified: 2 years ago

I used to easily find and access this forum as it was listed under my topics. Now, no more! To get here, I searched on home decorating and clicked on a forumite‘s topic.

Here is my topic list, no Kitchen Table to be seen. Yet, it was there just a few days ago. Go figure!

Anyone else have the same experience?

I think so - I happened upon an interesting post that was under several topics 1 of which was The Kitchen Table - as you’ve done here. I searched all the lists to add ”The Kitchen Table” to my list of topics that would come up in my list with new posts. Couldn’t find it. I wondered if this topic was an older Garden Web one & not included anymore but is sort of grandfathered in with the original subscribers but no new subscribers allowed. I wasn’t ever on Garden Web - only know about it being absorbed into Houzz from it being discussed here.

You have to use the word "The" as in "The Kitchen Table'"

It still shows up for me, under my topic list.

This site is weird. We just had this conversation on another forum. :-) Sometimes it's a browser issue, sometimes it's a Hozz vs. GW platform issue, sometimes it's a desktop vs the app issue....and sometimes it's just the weird random glitch of the day.

It's one of the buggiest sites I've ever used in my life. But it's also free, and I put up with it because I enjoy all of you.

It is The Kitchen Table. Try clicking on Explore All Discussions and scroll down to the Home forums. It is very much still here!!

Looks like you are on houzz.com and not Gardenweb.com

    Might that be the issue?

I think Carol’s got the right answer. Check out the difference in my searches below, first on houzz the second on gardenweb. Amazing they haven’t sorted this stuff out after all these years.

I often feel like Gardenweb is a sandbox we've been a bit begrudgingly allowed to play in...

I agree that it is oddly alphabetized under The Kitchen Table. However, it is not appearing in my "Your Topics" list regardless of whether I log in through Houzz or through GardenWeb.

^^^So it shows you following but doesn’t show up on your topics list?

I'm not sure it makes a difference which platform you use to access. The Kitchen Table shows up for me under both Garden Web and Houzz.

FWIW, I stick exclusively to the GW access as the Houzz presentation is not nearly as user friendly IMO. I encounter almost no glitches or problems with the site using GW and my laptop, No phone, no app, no Houzz :-))

@likestonehomes That’s not where you choose your topics.

Following @gardengal48 (PNW Z8/9) comment I pulled up Garden Web & searched for The Kitchen Table & found it in list. Of course I don’t have log in ID for GW having never heard of the site before I found Houzz.

I disagree, FOAS. That's the window that pops up when I click 'edit' at the top right on my list of topics, and what I see after I click in the search bar.

Note that I wrote only 'kitchen', and it shows I'm already following this forum

FWIW, I think advice on these issues can be problematic when it's unclear about device, platform, and whether you're using a browser or the app to access this site.

I'm using a desktop computer rn - Firefox browser on Mac OS13. I prefer going through the browser on my other devices too. I've never used the houzz app.

The forum that seems invisible to the search bar for me is Home Decorating Conversations. When I want to post something there and on another forum, I have to start there, since I can't add it by searching. I've scrolled through the entire list as well, and never saw it listed.

@foodonastump Thank you for chimibg in. Kitchen Tsble was on my topics list, just under Remodelling. That is, until a few days go, never to pop ip agsin. Also, as you can see in my above comment, it does not show up in the topic section search either.

@KW PNW Z8 When did yours dissappear?

Also, im wondering if Houzz decided to ditch it…

Sorry, I was definitely wrong with my last post.

Instead of going through the Houzz site, google ”gardenweb, kitchen table”

@likestonehomes Topic ’The Kitchen Table” didn’t disappear - I looked for it & couldn’t find it in the list of topics. I wasn’t aware of this topic until recently. I read a post that was cross posted with another topic I do have in my list is how I learned about it then went looking for it. I did pull up Gardenweb.com just to see & found it in that site’s list but I don’t have a log in created for that site. I know Houzz owns it now but I’m hazy on how / when posts appear on both sites. I was thinking to see if I can create a log in for Garden Web that’s the same as my Houzz log in - to keep things simpler for me. Who needs yet another user ID & password?

KW PNW Z8I think the login for gardenweb is the same as Houzz. I stay on gardenweb.com side, but the Houzz logo is at the top of the page, and I have no problem going from Gardenweb to Houzz, if needed.

The web addresses are indeed different for GW vs. Hzz. (See below.) They should - in theory - land you at the same places. However the reality is that the programming underneath each can be slightly different, resulting in different user experiences.

I'm a GW user from way back and have never created a log in for Hzz. When they bought up GW they mass imported all of us GW users back then.

The first thing I do when the site starts going wonky for me is to see what platform I'm on, then try the other. I always come in via GW, but the site has a habit of automatically defaulting you over to Hzz. I don't care, until/unless anything is being glitchy - in which case I then try the other.

Web browsers can make a huge difference in user experience. And their app is garbage so if you're using that, switch to the desktop version and see if that helps.

Good luck problem-solving - it is definitely a glitchy place. :)

Thanks for info both woodrose & @Ally De - here’s another glitch - I couldn’t tag woodrose but could for Ally De. That happens often now - that a person or OP can’t be tagged. Wonder if that has to do with on which platform the user ID was created? I used to receive an email notification if I’d been tagged but I don’t anymore & I haven’t changed settings on my profile. Anyway, I’m going to try signing in to Garden Web with my exisiting Houzz ID - if that doesn’t work I’ll try setting up a profile using my existing ID

Perhaps that's because some people set their privacy at higher thresholds than others...?

@carolb_w_fl_coastal_9/10 That’s a thought Carol, but I don’t think the ability to tag is related to privacy settings - I had looked at mine & they all seem to have to do with what public can view on another user’s profile. I could be wrong but that’s my guess because this tagging or not thing is a new issue for me & others have complained about it.

My bookmark is ths . gardenweb . com (I often type it into the browser). The browser URL for the landing page displays as www . gardenweb . com / discussions / explore-discussions which displays a list of ALL the sections (Gardening, Home, Nature, Exchanges & Trading, Garden FAQs, Home FAQs, UK, Australia) in the page main area, and a list at the left of my followed forums.

A link "Your Houzz" is at the upper right, which opens a drop-down menu of user control functions.

Firefox on a PC is my primary access method. Firefox on iPhone is a rare secondary. The mobile site layout is different than the PC layout ... and irritating, usually nags to install the Houzz app which I refuse to do.
