That tile is appropriate for the style of your home. It's not that you cannot replace it, it's just that homes like yours need a tile that looks handmade. Something too perfect will look foreign.

I guess you could install Cloe tile for floors.

aside from changing out the floor tile, do you have plans for painting or other changes?

in keeping with the style, I would just do a lighter version. and paint the walls much lighter, even a bright white.

Having lived in a circa 2000 southern CA Spanish style house and visited several 1920's Spanish/Mission style homes in the same area ... there is a huge difference between the look of the old/original ones and the newer ones. Lots of ugly/cheap Saltillo tiles in homes built in the 1990's.

I felt no guilt when we ripped up thousands of square feet of Saltillo tile made/installed in 2000, both inside and outside. The uneven surface was not easy to live with and the colors extremely limiting.

Satillo tile can be replaced with real stone tile, stone-look tiles or wood floors, that complement the style of the home. I would continue the wood into the hallways and find a stone-look tile for the bathrooms.

I can't imagine replacing it with anything because it IS timeless.
