Flooring Design Dilemma

ceramic tile installed on black sticky substance under peal and stick

in a bathroom we removed peal and stick tile from 10 years back and the subfloor is covered in black sticky substance. We can see that a linoleum floor was there before the sticky tiles and this could have been glued down with the sticky substance. Can we put mortar and tiles directly on top of the sticky substance. It is black but not mold. None on the baseboards or walls. All clean other than the subfloor. Any thoughts are appreciated.

I would clean it all off and start with a clean surface.

The finished product is only as good as the prep.

are going to buy thin subfloor and nail it down. Put tile on top of that. Threshold height should be fine from the hall into the bathroom. Only just thought of it now. Too much work to prep that floor. We were prepared to clean the surface but this solution is much easier. Thanks for your comments though. Much appreciated

I have to agree a thin layer over top would be my choice . Make sure that layer is meant for tile BTW
