Whitewashing an Oak Veneer particle board island top

I purchased an IKEA Tornviken Island for my sewing/craft room. The top and 2 shelves are particle board with an oak veneer - top has an oil-acrylic and the shelves a clear lacquer. It's great piece for the $ and how I will use it, however, the oak veneer is a bit dark. Can anyone advise if I can whitewash to lighten up the tone of the wood veneer? I can live with it but if I can make that change without ruining, I'll give it a try. I can just replace with real wood but I can't justify the cost for this piece. Thank you.
