Put the post in when you plant the rose. Then wait for the canes to grow and tie them up as they grow. It takes awhile to cover a tall pole (depending on the rose).

Robert, how would you tie it in though as it grows? unlike a fence or arch there’s nothing to tie onto the pole since its smooth which is why i was confused ? would i just tightly wrap twine around the entire pole/ plant then when i want to tie it in??

Oh they sell things you can use for this. Screws, hooks, wires--there are several ways to tie it in.

One of my roses is on the telephone pole, for example, and I drill a screw in to the pole and tie one cane to it when it's tall enough. As it grows, I wrap it around and add more screws/ties to keep it in place. But nurseries, home depot, and Amazon all sell complete kits for this sort of thing as well. I just go the easiest route and it works for me.
