I would definitely go with the eclectic gallery wall. There are some gorgeous Impressionist paintings on Etsy by Monet, Renoir, Degas that would look beautiful there.

Imo, larger paintings tend to make more of an impact than gallery walls. I photoshopped the gallery wall you posted and don't find it complementary in your space but I would select it over bookcases.

You mentioned a wabi sabi abstract painting. It appears that you have a small child. If that is the case you might consider large scale toddler art instead. They tend to be great abstract artist but only for a short period of time, until 4-5 yo. Take a large piece of MDF and paint the entire piece white. After it dries give your toddler three sample cans of paint, one at a time, with instructions to paint a picture of the family. After about 3-5 minutes with each color your child will have created a masterpiece. Based on the art you posted, I would make the samples colors black, green, and grey. You will not end up with anything that resembles the piece above but it will be infinitely more spectacular.

Gallery walls feel like the latest Instagram clutter up.

One large piece, and it need not "match" anything...unless YOU want it to.

Large artwork is more compelling. Balances out the TV, is another focal point, anchors this in between space. Gallery looks like cluttered after thought or no-man's land. Shelves are odd in this location.

I like the large piece that you posted. Don't know if it is available. Looks warm, inviting, yet sophisticated.

I will almost always suggest a larger and more impactful piece of artwork over a grouping of smaller pieces. Will make the same suggest for your wall.

If you do one piece, then the 60x60 you have marked would be a bit large.

Imo square is the wrong shape. I would do larger and rectangle. I would hang the painting just above the outlet. So, longer then you intended.

I have never heard of the 60% rule but I think many decor rules should be thrown out the window if your goal is a spectacular space. Following every rule will give you average at best.

I really like the idea of Sabi artwork with a narrow bench underneath - a more spacious feel, especially if you don’t need a bookcase.

It would be helpful to see all sides of this open space.

Where does the door on that wall lead?

With just the info given, and seeing you have a little one, I wonder if a good-looking cabinet would be considered … both for breaking up all of the flatness along that wall, and for storing toys and things.

If not, I’d definitely want a console with a lamp on it, and art above. The lamp would be very nice ambient light in such a large open space. It looks like there’s plenty of room for having a piece of furniture there. But again, it would help to see what else is in these adjoining rooms. I don’t know if you already have an armoire/cabinet or console elsewhere.

I like gallery walls if they are photographs with a theme, otherwise I think the impact is scattered and meaningless. I like the idea of a large picture/canvas, but not the one you've chosen - I think you need something with a bolder look or colours.. A bookcase is a great idea, but not if you've got crawling babes or toddlers.

It looks like you have a baby set there... so maybe something for baby. As they grow, activity pads. Art pads, and you can hang their gallery above their drawing height. Some shelving to hold supplies, baskets/bins to hold things. Maybe an adjustable murphy bench to flip down for the kid to work on.

Do you NEED book cases/display. If not then no don't add something you then will struggle to fill.
