We are getting a gas insert for our fireplace installed. The contractor discovered that plywood had been installed behind the granite, which is a fire hazard and needs to be corrected. He is able to do the job, but cannot guarantee that granite on the wall will not break when removing it. If the granite breaks, we need to replace with tile or stone - a noncombustible material. I would appreciate ideas about what to install on the wall - images and links to particular items are a bonus!

My thought was to do something simple which is the same color/tone as the built in cabinets on either side of the fireplace. I know the mantel needs to be replaced and know about the clearances needed.
