Well, without seeing the whole bathroom and not knowing any other details, I’d say that side piece of marble doesn’t match. The installation could be better, too. Any other details you wish to share? And more photos?

Does he offer an explanation as to why the sidesplash doesn’t match the backsplash or vanity top? Not a good look for sure.

I'd tell him he can stand by it all he wants. But you're going to stand on not paying him any final payments until he fixes it with the correct stone and cut. Or your standing" is going to turn into "walking" to the nearest lawyer's office.

It's thicker than the other backsplash. Shorter in height than the other back splash. Does not reach the end of the countertop. The "marble" does not match the other "marble" backsplash or top.

Nope, just nope.

It doesn’t match. He’s a contractor, not a designer, and so his expertise is getting things built properly and functional. Since the stone varies so significantly, I‘m guessing it wasn’t spec’d at the time the backsplash and countertop were. It will be very hard to get a piece of stone to match. Even the same stone can look vastly different depending on what part it was cut out of. This level of sourcing is not usually within his scope of work. So, if you want it to match, you or a designer would have to have to do the legwork or refabricate the counter, backsplash snd sidesplash from the same slab. I prefer the look without a side splash anyway, so I would just have him remove it.

You don’t need the side splash, but wow, that’s ugly and he knows it! Hopefully it’s not glued.

As mentioned in the above posts; that backsplash is totally: not acceptable. Of course your contractor needs to remove it. Please show him these posts. The backsplash must be the same height and also match the vanity countertop. I am sorry this happened to you.

Andrea, even if the contractor could excuse the marble pattern because "it's a natural product, blah, blah" that slide splash is not proper or functional. It's the wrong length, the wrong width and the wrong height.

Need more pictures did he do a 20k marble shower or something?

Side splash is not Carrara -

There is no reason for that side splash - based upon how far away your sink appears to be (unless the angle makes it seem farther away from wall than it is).

He needs to remove it ASAP + fix any damage to the drywall.

Challenge him to find one photo where a different material + different height side splash ( that’s thicker than the backsplash + doesn’t run to the end of the counter) has been installed - other than in a bathroom he did. And no - he can’t use a photo from Houzz where someone is complaining about their side splash.

Once again the old "as long as you prominently feature this photo on your website as an example of your work, I'll accept it." or some variant of "I'll leave this as my online review and you can respond how this is perfectly fine" can be utilized here.

You do not need a side splash. The bet solution to this.

FYI i am definitely planning on posting bathroom pictures when this is done, especially of the side splash he choose.. I have a feeling that if I do anything more then this I will be looking at an unfinished bathroom and court. As far as I know he has no knowledge of this site, and if he does find it prior to the bathroom being finished it will do him good to hear the truth. Like @Ruth I didn't think there was a need for a side splash, but he kept insisting. Thank you all. Hopefully but the middle of next week I can show all of you a really nice video of the completed jog.

I understand about being hesitant to say something - I had a tile setter pack up his stuff at lunch time when I questioned his use of MASTIC while installing Carrara marble on my shower walls (even though the bucket CLEARY provided that it couldn’t be used with translucent stone or over a surface waterproof membrane - and I had both). Plus, there were bags of premium white thinset sitting right there with all of the materials he purchased for the bathroom renovation.

But he was NOT HAPPY - bc I was being ”difficult” - again.

FYI - I had previously questioned the flat pvc liner on the subfloor = no pre slope. Those were the only questions I had - and I was extremely nice/polite about both (plus, asked questions vs. accusing him of wrongdoing) + offered to pay more $ to have them fixed.

it’s difficult to find a new contractor to jump in to complete a renovation. So, if the rest of his work has been of good quality - I understand why you don’t want to lose him.

HOWEVER, if there are other issues - that could change my mind.

Barring anymore shipping delays everything but the door between the bathroom & my bedroom was supposed to be done this week, shower door, electrical work & some finishing type touchups. Shower door came in yesterday which he installed & changed the side splash to the one in the picture which i brought.(as i said it was a bit of a battle).

As I said I could handle the back orders but it was some of his inconsistencies in what he was telling me on Monday that was frustrating me the most. Last week multiple times he told the electricians were coming on Tuesday the 2nd, so that meant everything but the door between the bedroom & bath would be done. When I asked on Monday what time they were going to be at my place on Tuesday, that was when he told me several times they were coming on the 6th. Finally I said the 6th, that's Sunday. As I said above, things just starting falling apart more so I went down stairs instead of exploding.
