Stain Drying or Improperly Applied

last year

Hi there! About 15 hours ago (from taking these photos), we had our front porch stained with Behr Semi Transparent waterproofing exterior stain and primer. It is currently looking like this…I’m on the brink of panicking and need some confirmation that this could still be drying? It feels a bit tacky when walking on it still.

DIY or who applied the stain? Have you asked the installer if not yourselHow long does it say to takes to dry? Was the deck completely dry when this was applied? Have you asked at HD what their thoughts were on the drying? How was the deck prepped? What was the previous finish? How was this applied? Has the weather been humid? How many coats were applied? How was the stain applied? From my perspective, why did you choose Behr (next time I have success with anything Behr will be the first time)?

Professionally done. No previous finish. Applied with a brush. Yes, it was humid yesterday. One coat applied as that’s all we want. And no, I don’t have a Time Machine to go back and not choose Behr. I have an email into our contractor.

If those areas get no sun or air movement it may just take more time for those spots to dry, especially in humid conditions. I would call the contractor rather than email but 15 hours may not be enough time. What was the exact product used?

“One coat applied as thats all we want.” Yet the instructions call for a specific prep process with specific prep products and multiple coats.

If this is the product it also says this:

"How long does Behr semi-transparent waterproofing stain and sealer take to dry?"

"72 hours1-2 hours before recoat. Allow 72 hours for full cure."

The tackiness will go away but the lap marks won’t…

Honestly, I had to Google “lap marks” and this is obviously a major application screw up. Talked with the painters and they’re not acknowledging that. They’re offering another coat (which won’t fix the lap marks and may make things worse) or to apply a solid stain, which we very much do not like the look of. I feel like there needs to be a resolution of fixing the current issue, but I don’t know what that resolution would be.

It’s Behr. Any company that would use that is not professional.

I requested it, so that’s on me. I found the color I liked best out of all stains and went with it. Need to figure out where to go from here now.

But again, this appears to be an application problem and nothing to do with the paint.

There is nothing ‘wrong’ with behr, it was 100% the painters fault. They sent someone with no experience with stain. At this point a carefully applied second coat with water and rags on hand to blend it or they will need to sand the deck down to raw wood and start over. Regardless it’s on them.

I would have someone else sand it all off and start over. Obviously above the talent level of the first guy so you may want to rethink keeping him on the task.

I agree with Hallett, nothing wrong with Behr. They make a good stain. I also agree with millworkman its the talent level of the guy who applied the stain. It needs to be all sanded off and done over, with someone that actually knows how to apply stain.
