yes we're the only ones with the unique brick pattern :) my husband is the driving force behind the colour change and insists that it will deter potential home buyers when we go to list the house in about 5-7 years.

What you have is much nicer than the light color. Its a very unique house, and pretty darn sure, it will not deter buyers. Might just do the opposite. I do agree, the front entry is very dark, and should be enhanced. I like what Lyn Nielson suggested in the first post. I would not be ruining it by painting the brick

It is a good idea to keep buyers in mind in your case. I agree to leave the brick alone....your future buyer may like the brick as is, if not, will want their own treatment anyway. Pretty much a rule of thumb in RE, if it's in good shape better to not touch it.

In this sketch you posted above we still see the brick design in grey through your white. Are you using a semi-translucent or opaque stain?

I love what you did in your mock-up! I think it looks better with the light stain, personally. It’s still very unique. Of course, your general neighborhood style has to be thought of.
How did you do that mock-up? I need to pick out a color for my house pronto!

Here the house in a creamy white with black/brown doors. I show a double front door with transom instead of a single door with sidelights. I would think the brick work design has surface relief so that's what I show.

@tracefloyd I appreciate your comment, thank you. The permanence of staining the brick is a bit scary knowing it’s a pretty permanent thing. I also keep thinking about the man who built our home. He built it for his family and I assume the masonry skill was very labour intensive. A labour of love?

@lizdv Thank you for your comments. The mock up I did isn’t exactly what the product looks like…it’s actually opaque. So my understanding is that SprayNet would cover all the various colours of the brick completely to the new colour that is applied.
Yes there will remain surface relief although the only areas where there is relevant is at the corners of the house. Every other dark red brick is flush on the wall. (Hope that makes sense)

@worthyvess Thanks for your comment. The mock up came from the SprayNet website. You just make an account and then can input your phone and “colour” away.

A small thing, but I would change the top garage door panel to one without windows, then paint it to recede. Regardless of color of the brick, there is already enough going on without drawing attention to the garage door.

Thank you, I love this suggestion. I didn’t know you can remove and replace a garage door panel. And a colour that would “recede”…does that generally mean that you paint it a shade lighter or darker than the brick?

Sorry IMO painting brick is always a bad idea. I think the round pillars are wrong, and so are the railings and the garage door. The front door is too dark all of those cheaper than ruining the brick, I think the brick is what makes your house interesting and all one color is going to look bad.

Don't worry about replacing the pillars and stuff like that unless they are falling down. Money spent on sprucing up or fixing small details is fine. Otherwise it's a waste...you have no idea what your future buyer will want.

Looks like you've decided not to paint the brick. I would try to give the house a classic look. Squared columns painted in beige the same colour as the trim on the house. A black double door with glass and a transom. A black garage door.

@lisedv’s rendering looks a lot better. The entryway becomes much more of a focal point than the garage door, as it should be.

Ignore the folks on here who say to embrace what you have. The pink brick and especially the design in the brick are a very hard no for most people. If your house was historical and more spacious, the home design could get away with the pattern, but you have a newer home and while I am not saying that your home is small, it is also not a 10,000 square foot mansion on 20 acres.

I like the idea of the stain. It keeps the design without it being overwhelming.

I do agree the whtie/off-white with the original brick pattern showing through is very attractive.

Some people seem to suggest that the white/off-white/ tone on tone colouring is super trendy, and will be out of favour very soon. Thoughts? Any stain we do will be completely opaque with no design showing through and the only relief is on the corners of the house.
I’m worried that there will be a lot of “empty” space especially between the garage and bedroom windows. I’m wondering if I need to add in some decorative feature?

um wait, what? This house is adorable as is. Please fold your money (doubling it) and put it back in your pocket. Maybe get DH a lovely boat or a new hobby.

Haha I love this! Yes keeping the $16000 would be much better. It’s a very expensive home “improvement”. He’s always wanted to be a captain;)
