Shelves next to a range are not a good idea especially with that flat type hood. The cooking plume spreads out to the sides and with the poor capture area of that flat style hood you can be guaranteed of greasy shelves and lights.

vinmarks, that is a good point. It is not updated in the plan but I will have a 36" 800 cfm hood insert over a 30" range. The shelves will also be 3" narrower than shown, so I do not think that it should be a problem.

If you still want a picture light but like Beverly's swing arm idea, they do make picture lights with swing arms.

IMO worse place possible for open shelving and then adding another thing to clean makes it worse

Unrelated to the question about lights, but I’m wondering why the top drawers on either side of the range are so narrow (half the width of the lower drawers.) It would probably be more efficient to have wide drawers with organizers inside.

I agree with chicgoans - I did 2 top drawers on a 34" cabinet, and I wish I had gone with one. When I remodel our current kitchen, all the top drawers will be full width.

Agree on the drawers. You can partition a larger drawer with organizers or containers, but you can't make a small drawer bigger.

I was trying to decide of all big drawers my be problematic since our current kitchen's biggest drawer is only 15 inches wide. Thank you for the suggestions, I will see if I can get that changed out.

We will have an 800 CMF 36" vent hood over the 30" range, so I was thinking that would reduce the grease that could potentially get on them.

Heat and light degrades spices and oils rapidly. Those shelves are a terrible idea for their storage. It’s a terrible idea for dishes as well. Who wants to wash dishes before they can use them? Artwork? Fake plants? Only if it’s a cheap poster, cheaply framed. Fake plants are cringe somewhere they are so obviously fake.

There really isn't much good use for open shelves as either function or diplay. It’s one of the sad ”I don’t really use my kitchen” trends that is going away.

I wouldn't select a SS chimney hood for a kitchen. If the hood is wider than the range, then maybe shelves are no longer appropriate.
