I suspect this is probably an older variety, maybe even a species because they grow like weeds in my sister's yard. She doesn't know what they are because they were already planted there when she moved in over 20 years ago. They don't look their best because we started having warm weather in February, then it would flip back freezing cold, then it would flip back warm, and so on and so on. Consequently they got a lot of frost damage and on top of that her neighbor removed a tree that was shading them and they haven't been happy with as much sun as they've gotten.
