There's a vast range of products sold as engineered hardwood, ranging from plywood material with a full quarter inch of refinishable hardwood on top to particle board junk with a photolithographed "look of real wood" microscopically thin wear layer. A quality flooring installer or store should be able to help you sort through what's available in your area, as there are many dozens of providers.

Engineered flooring can be much less likely to show seasonal expansion/contraction cracks, so probably the better choice for radiant heating.

Engineered is the only real possibility. You can buy junk, or you can buy quality. It's up to you. But you can't get something for nothing.

Another source I list is Monarch Plank. Finished and unfinished engineered in widths 7-11". It's recommended to get a box to evaluate the tone differences beyond a small sample.

7-11 inches? We don't know how old this brownstone is. 100 years? It's your home but I see a number of these go to a narrower width. Matching or coming close to the time period seems to be #1 on lists.

So helpful @dan1888 thank you, do you have a preference? We are looking at the Mirage Muse line that has a 4mm top layer. I feel like I've gone down the rabbit hole looking at so many brands and these are what we've narrowed it down to.

I would choose European Oak for aesthetic reasons in wide flat cut.. DuChateau has that and Mirage doesn't. Other suppliers have European Oak if you want to compare pricing. Hurst is one. 10 1/4" x 3/4" European French Oak Cascade | Hurst Hardwoods Monarch Plank is another. Wide plank engineered hardwood flooring in European Oak and Walnut (monarchplank.com) All the European Oak is manufactured in Asian countries. The finish would need to be tested for scratch resistance. You can buy unfinished and use a quality finish such as Ciranova Ecofix Plus or Bona Traffic. Coat the edges before install.
