When i was a student with no money for gifts, I knit a pair of Nordic like, patterned infant mittens on something like size 2 US needles. It took forever. (File under What WAS I thinking?!)

I wanted to make the recipient sign in her own right ventricle blood that she would cherish them and keep them forever.

Very cute. How did you do the buttons? I think I might have made that pattern. I started knitting last summer and soon discovered you can avoid sewing seams if you use circular or double pointed needles. I like them!

The bobbles for buttons I made after watching a youtube video. Just 12 dc in a row...depending on how big you want the bobble, then roll it up and get a needle and just sew the yarn through again and again to secure it into a bobble.

As some of you know, we lost our house to a fire in 2020 including almost everything we owned. Included in our cherished belongings were things my mom and my DH"S grandmother had knit or quilted or sewn for our own kids which we had saved to be handed down to grandchildren. In the past year we've had two grandkids with nothing to hand down from our sons - their fathers. It's one of my biggest sorrows. So yes if you have those items do cherish them.

Ah. Crochet is a closed book to me.

I have knit with circular and dp (double pointed) and straight needles — sweaters, mittens, straight jackets.

Sometmes the blocking can not gibe the most defined, neat look to a garment that is made with circular needles. I feel that most simple pullover (”jumper”) sweaters have a tendency to hang like a shapeless sack — not a look of which I’m fond.

I have come to prefer knitting in the round with either a circular needle for larger items or DPNs for smaller items. Then you don't have to do that tedious sewing up.

Currently I'm making socks for DGS's christening using hand spun alpaca wool from a flock his other grandparents had before they sold up and retired.

I love knitting baby gifts. I prefer knitting for clothing and crocheting for baby blankets. My favorite gift these days is to crochet a baby blanket using any ABC pattern, but spelling out the baby’s full name, birth date, and weight. It makes a cute gift and keepsake for grandchildren.

Faftris, I wouldn't call it 'fear' of dp needles, but rather near hatred working with them...to the point where, at one point, I let out a primal scream. Scared the daylights out of DH and the kitties! Knitting, crocheting, repetitive motion is supposed to have a zen -like quality to it, but dp needles for me is the absolute opposite. DH's grandmother used to make socks all the time (no pattern of course) and work fine dp needles like a machine...but not for me!

I grew up on aluminum needles and still use them. I know, I'm a cretin. I bet that wood DPs are less slippery.

Adorable and worth the aggravation. Annie, I am with you on the DPNs. I have read about people using two circular needles instead (magic circle), but I have not done it. The last thing I worked on in the round was a cap and I stopped when I saw an error several rows back -- meant to go back and fix it, but never finished it. Perhaps I will try to persevere if it is for grandchildren, but nothing less is likely to get me to try DPNs again. The again, the baby booties I remember making had a seam -- and it's not that much to sew up.

I love working with DP's. Circular not so much. I have seen videos of people using a circular to knit small round things by pulling out a loop that they keep moving about. Dont get it. I dont knit like I used to as I find it tiring but I still enjoy it. I like the coated metal needles. I used to do a lot of socks in 2 or 3. I knit firm and I get a nice smooth transition from needle to needle. If you get a loose spot just keep moving the stitches by knitting off a couple from the next needle at every transition.

I prefer wood or bamboo dpns. It helps if you have needles that are long enough to hold all the stitches comfortably, and short enough for a more comfortable experience. organize the needles so that the two you are knitting with are on top of the three or four needles holding the stitches.
