If someone did this to a unit I installed: I would void their warranty. That's how serious it is. The box is a heat transfer device, it doesn't perform any magic whatsoever.

With an open mind one might also learn common sense is subjective depending on who you are talking to. Here's questions that in my eye should tell one all they need to know about hiding heat pumps. Why are you buying it? To me there's only one reason, to keep me comfortable when ambient temperature is uncomfortable. If on an uncomfortably hot day you set in a chair surrounded by walls, bushes,fence or curtain bought off Amazon will it be cooler than had you sit in in an area where air movement is unobstructed? I always sit where air circulation in not obstructed. Heat pumps (with exception of geothermal and water source) are 100% dependent of huge quantities of moving air with absolute minimum of air being re-circulated. It doesn't require a slide rule or formal education to see the correlation between a person sitting in a confined area and heat pump performance within the same confined area.

You should be able to find the specific recommended clearances in the manufacturer's installation instructions. Generally, a clearance of 24" on all sides is adequate with respect to air flow.
