bathroom light fixture

last year

Help! Im so stuck trying to decide what kind of light to put above the tub in my newly renovated primary bathroom. I was going for tranquil spa vibes, maybe something that would let off a cool, relaxing shadow. Still waiting for shower glass and vanity backsplash to be installed. Included pics of the whole bathroom so you can get a better idea. Thank you in advance!

I was thinking something similar too! But I'm still not sure 🤔

I like the idea of repeating the black and the graceful curve of the armoire.

I love the marble cement look of this Elliot light. Might not be throwing off the shadows you wish but on a dimmer it could cast a cozy light. I think the fixture itself has a nice shadowy vibe that goes with your semi-spa, semi-sleek urban look. The shape also echos the shape of the tub below and helps define this end of the room more. Your black cabinet seems like the odd fellow out in this room and I like how the shape of this Elliot light echos the roundness of the black cabinet.

You have some unusual combinations of finishes and pieces in here that I like. I know you are not finished yet. Do you plan on running the wall marble along the sink as a backsplash? It ends abruptly and would look great if it continued along the sink.

I like this idea! Thank you!! Yes as stated in my original post, the white quartz of the vanity will be repeated as the backsplash and will meet the height of the wall tile. That is being installed today.

What is the wall tile? I love it. And the herringbone floors are stunning. It is really refreshing to see such a nice muted selection of tile colors. There is a slight industrial-refined vibe going here that is so cool.

I think that's an understatement. It would be OK if it didn't stick out so far into the room, but as is it just doesn't seem right.

The rest of the bath is gorgeous. I like the light ffpalms posted but not sure about the lights all aiming upwards? Maybe that wouldgive you the "shadows" you want for a soothing vibe.

Kendra thank you so much that really means a lot because it was very confusing and stressful trying to pick everything out. Of course you want it all to work out together. I'm not a designer but I do enjoy the work and I just pick what I like.

Here is the link for the wall tile. It's in bone white.

Kate I appreciate the feedback. The black cabinet serves as necessary storage for us since I wanted an open vanity. I liked the combination of black and tan, to me it is timeless. I know it may look weird that it is not fully recessed but we couldn't cut into the wall any more than we did. I'm lucky it even got that far in. Of course arching the sheet rock would also help make it look better which we may do down the road. After asking many people about color, it seemed black was the best fit over brown. Matching the wood tone of the vanity with other brown wood is kind of difficult so I figured black would be easier and I like the contrast.

I'm going to add an updated picture later today and maybe it will help you see a bit better how the cabinet fits with the rest of the decor.

I don't think the codes have changed. It's prohibited to hang a light fixture with less than 8' between the bottom of the fixture and the top of the tub. See NEC Code 410.10(D), dated 2020:

410.10(D) Bathtub and Shower Areas. A luminaire installed in a bathtub or shower area shall meet all of the following requirements:

N (1) No parts of cord-connected luminaires, chain-, cable-, or cord-suspended luminaires, lighting track, pendants, or ceiling-suspended (paddle) fans shall be located within a zone measured 900 mm (3 ft) horizontally and 2.5 m (8 ft) vertically from the top of the bathtub rim or shower stall threshold. This zone is all-encompassing and includes the space directly over the tub or shower stall.

N (2) Luminaires located within the actual outside dimension of the bathtub or shower to a height of 2.5 m (8 ft) vertically from the top of the bathtub rim or shower threshold shall be marked suitable for damp locations or marked suitable for wet locations. Luminaires located where subject to shower spray shall be marked suitable for wet locations.

This IKEA light echoes your arches

I would put a simple flush mount for inspection and then a semi flush post inspection, otherwise you will hit you head when you stand up out of the tub or the chandelier will look misplaced if hung too high.

Seriously? Ignore the safety code RL? Sorry but that's very bad advice coming from a pro.

  • last year

Thanks everyone for the advice. It is very much appreciated. Yes, I understand it's not to code. I just want my bathroom to look pretty without the ceiling police on my case. I'm not selling my house. When I do in 30 years I'll let you guys know and put a high hat there 🤦‍♀️

Ignore the curtains. I knowww they look bad. They're coming down. Trial and error people. It's a work in progress.

I kinda like the look of a lantern. See attached updated pics and a possible light?

These are gorgeous but they look like they'd be out of my budget lol. Cool ideas. Also, may be a bit too modern for my taste. None the less beautiful.

I would pick a light fixture that doesn't have me look at bare light bulbs, or bare led's. I want to be able to lean back in a tub, without bare bulbs glaring at my eyes. Personally I would pick something soft with a diffuser.

Here’s a Kelly Wearstler fixture coming to auction next weekend. Normally $2250

I wish someone could explain to me the attraction of anything by Kelly Wearstler....

Interesting perspective! Personally, I'm drawn to Kelly Wearstler's bold experimentation with scale, texture and shape. I's always exciting to see something unexpected and innovative compared to more traditional designs. To each their own, I suppose!

There's enough of a point of view and interest in every single detail of this room that I'd hire her in a second.

Good answer, Paul. Just not my style.

I used the Serena & Lily Capiz pendant. They also have one that is "oval", so not as tall.

    That's beautiful! Love your bathroom
