Looking for a bench…

last year

Still finessing this room after having FP installed and STILL waiting for sconces for FP wall…

I would like to replace the console/shelf under the window with a bench that could be pulled over when we need to squeeze more people around the table. The other goal is to simplify that area — it is cluttery — but I would add at least one plant stand because this is an excellent spot for plants.

The dining table and chair legs are walnut. But the base of the table is black, as is the FP insert. So I’m thinking walnut or black, and fairly simple design.

It can be 4-5’ long but can’t be too deep (around 18” would be fine), and I would prefer something with a back but that might not be possible. Here are a few that I looked at. What I’m finding is that most walnut pieces tend to lean MCM, which isn’t really what I want. I do think bench no. 2 is cool, though it is almost $2000!

Oh, here’s the room. Not staged, haha, so let’s ignore the multiple vases on the table and the tissue box DH thinks belongs there.

Any suggestions?

RN, my mom died at 55 and she was so opposite of my dad…I often wonder what she’d be like as an elderly lady. More cranky, or more mellow? I do think being a grandma (for only a couple years) softened her a bit, so maybe with 3 grandkids…who knows?

just fyi all, I am going to delete this post tonight but not for any negative reason. You have all been wonderful, thank you again.

I'm glad I checked back this afternoon and was able to see those wonderful photos and read more about your Dad. Your stories touched my heart and reminded me of my father. Aging isn't an easy process and it shows what a remarkable individual your father was to keep such a positive outlook.

Sue, I was afraid you might not be able to delete the entire thread because it had been up for over a week. You still should be able to delete or edit some of your replies, hopefully, the ones with the photos. If you want, a few of us could flag the thread and it will go into the Hzz black hole.

It is very weird to me that the ”last one left” thread just resurfaced…I was just talking to DH about how there is now no one to remember what my early childhood was like, etc. His parents are gone but he has siblings who are 15 and 18 years older who can share the stories.

Yesterday I put together several bulletin boards of photos for the service and it was not sad at all. Last night my two best friends came over with a huge basket filled with food and flowers. Another good friend brought food the other day. I am blessed with some amazing friends (who also knew and adored my dad). My faraway son and wife are flying in tonight and will be here for the rest of the week. He’s the only grandchild who didn’t see my dad in the hospital; I don’t think the loss feels real to him yet. As you can imagine, my dad was a fantastic grandpa! He told them he loved them and was proud of them every time he spoke to them.

Weird story. Same son got a letter in the mail from my dad yesterday! The letter had been mailed a month ago. Because he doesn’t check his mail box every day, the letter may have been sitting there a few days — it may actually have arrived on the day my dad died. AND it was postmarked on the first anniversary of DS and DDIL wedding.

  • last year

Wow! That gave me (good) chills about the letter. From what you’ve shared about your dad, it doesn’t surprise me. He’s sending love and comfort. ❤️

That is a weird, but so cool, story! There are angels among us.

Months after my paternal grandmother tragically died, I received a card in the mail. I recognized her writing right away. It was a birthday card. She always bought cards ahead of time and had them ready to mail. My aunt found and mailed to me. DH came home from work and I was just sobbing.

Thank you all again. Back to the original issue, I posted this in the bargains thread: I got this sewing machine table free from our town’s buy-nothing FB page. I raised my hand before I had a clue about where to put it, but I love it here! No more bench searches.

The details on this are so pretty. And it looks good with my dining table, which has a black cast iron base.

The woman who gave it to me said it reminded her of her dad, because it had been his. That makes it extra special to me.

  • last year

Sue - it was meant to be and it does look nice there. I really like how you can see the decorative

woodworking on the side and front of the drawers. My grandmother had an old Singer treadle but it was lacked the fancy details.

Had to come back and add this story.

When my dad was near the end, DH found a nickle on the floor in his hospital room. He said something silly like, oh look, a gift from your dad. Then on the day he passed, another coin appeared just outside his room. Okay, not that unusual. Then we went home. Found a penny in the driveway. Hmm.

On a nice day between dad’s death and his service, DH and I went for a hike in the woods, then stopped for lunch. After lunch, DH stopped in the rest room and while I waited, I randomly walked up the street. Suddenly I came across HUNDREDS of pennies on the sidewalk. Now it’s getting weird.

Fast forward two weeks and DS and DDIL are here for the closing of their new house. DDIL and I are at the house early the next morning and we walk all around, in every room. The house is completely empty and spotless. We spend extra time in the kitchen, looking at the atrocious decor and specifically talk about the floor. An hour later, DS arrives with DH. DH walks into the kitchen and calls to me, ”did you see this?” You guessed it, a penny on the floor.

We left the penny on the kitchen window sill.

  • last year

Whoa Sue! That’s crazy and wonderful at the same time.

Accept it as a comforting sign. Whisper to your dad that you get it, he can now start sending paper money.
