I made this bouquet for mom, using All 4 Cherry Blossoms, Claire Rose, Juliet, Moonstone and Limonium.

This year my wife is out of state moving her dad into an assisted living situation; so our daughter called her and wished her a happy mother's day. along with she gave her a candle a couple of days ago.

on a yearly basis I take a tote full of my cut roses to church with a sign that says happy mother's day-take one.

What a sight for old eyes like mine!

I had a gardenia, August Beauty, pot cultured, that was tough as nails as long as it got regular fertilizing with alternately liquid feedings, one time high phosphorus, and the next feeding of acid loving formula, all growing season long. It was kept in full sun with special attention paid to never letting it get even a hint of drying out. Insect damage....mostly had to watch for spider mites which were knocked senseless with AVID.

What a spectacle it was year by year until it got 3' across and 2' high growing in a 10 gallon trade black plastic pot. August Beauty got so large that I donated it to a large local public garden where the elderly gentleladies took blooms from it and floated them in bowls. It would bloom repeatedly all summer long, at times having 70+ blooms open at once.

At home, over winter I placed it into my fruit cellar where it never got dangerously cold, but was too cold to grow. It didn't drop a leaf all winter long living in a state of suspended animation. When put out in spring, it didn't skip a beat, and continued growing like nothing happened.

At the garden, its winter care was lacking, so it died after its first winter there. Such a sad loss for a stunner.

Thought you might like a report on how we Northeners can grow gardenias too. The right variety, and the proper care figured out through much trial and error and success is possible.

My August Beauty did get periodical immature flower bud drop at times, which I could never quite figure out, but those buds that held on and bloomed were plenty sufficient to put on quite a show....and the fragrance...unbelievable.

Ben, that's is such a delicious bouquet you have made for your Mom. The roses are luscious and I've added a couple of them to my bucket list-- All 4 Cherry Blossoms and Juliet. But I'm most jealous of your Limonium, which I thought I'd try years ago after seeing Ingrid's plants. It was not to be. You Californians are so lucky to be able to grow these special plants. Have a wonderful Mother's Day party. My son in law, who is like a son to me, will be grilling my steak. I just want to chill out on the patio in our 84F today, but I'm sure I'll do some watering and make some twice baked potatoes to go with the steaks. Diane

I had to remind both my daughter, who is home this weekend, and my husband, that today is Mother's Day. But my husband makes and brings me breakfast in bed every day of my life, and my daughter and I are happily close, so I don't feel neglected.

My two sisters are visiting from the U.S., and what a great reunion it is. Today DD took them off for a tour of the area while I stayed home and relaxed after some days of hostessing. I went out and worked in the garden! Not much would have made me happier. Just having to think only of myself for half a day was very relaxing. Then everybody returned, and the talk and visiting started again. I'm a fortunate wife and mother.

I'm also remembering my Mother and thinking of everyone who has lost theirs. Have a wonderful Day. Moses,I love your Gardenia story! You did a great job with that gardenia and it sounds like a beauty. I agree August Beauty is one of the better varieties. I had a few at my old house and they bloomed a lot and were easier to care for than some others that I had killed lol! I don't know what variety this one is. It is by the back steps. There's another huge shrub right next to it, that I have yet to identify. That other shrub grows monsterous and tries to shade out the gardenia and I have to continually whack it back! The first winter we were here it rained then froze to 10F one night! Very unusual for us. This gardenia had branches burst open from the freeze. I had to cut it down to a couple feet high. This year it has come back enough to produce several blooms which have begun opening for Mother's Day!

We were able to have a very low key day just spent together. Easy food...a great walk together and an ice cream. Some beautiful cards, a potted plant and a few gifts. LOVELY day! And another chance to really appreciate my DH and all my kids. Nice to hear how everyone else spent the day. Sounds like a happy Mother's Day all around.

We grilled Tomahawk steaks. Mom can’t remember the name, she told all her friends she was served ’Tom Hanks’ Steaks, lol!
