What do I do with this boring nook?

This area behind our TV is so blah. I hate it and want to add some interest but juat cant settle on what exactly to do. Paint? what color and what area? Should I tie in the areas under and shelves? Add some interest with board and batten? Maybe some sconces? I tried wallpaper but my hubby later confessed he hates wallpaper. My other problem is this room is dark. I am planning to paint the whole house a shade if white. I had a feiend recommend painting behind the TV a dark color to make it feel mire cozy, but im scared it will make it feel more dark and basementlike. the very first thing to do is edit. When everything is 'special', nothing is special.

I would paint out the brick of the fireplace a dark color, black maybe, but definitely dark. deep green, navy, favorite color?

If the TV and credenza are staying put, I would paint the alcove deep as well, including the credenza so the TV and it all disapear. Highlight just the back wall of the built in shelves, with a medium tone to add some interest... aqua, a medium blue, Green? I don't see any accent colors in the photos... add some pillows in the same colors. Curate your display shelves and keep the TV credenza clear of accessories. Paint the ceiling and the other walls a fresh coat of high LRV not gray.

On the contrary, the room doesn't need any more, it needs less. There are too many disparate things cluttering up the area. If you're going to paint, you will need to remove everything, so after it's done, be very judicious in what you choose to put back. Keep it simple.

You're not showing the whole room. As to anything behind the tv? It's a tv! when it isn't on, get an app from You tube and turn it to art ! Take all the clutter off the console top and from the floor around it.

As to painting a room white to make it light? It doesn't work, and for that you need electricity. Lamps, recessed lighting .

Go stand back, take more pics, and show every angle of the room.

Yes, you need light, but, white walls, wont help with that. You need lighting, like ceiling lights, table lights, floor lamps, etc. Thats what makes a room look brighter. Also make sure that all the bulbs are daylight type, if you are looking for a much brighter room. I agree, we need some more and better pictures.

That mirror you have over the fireplace is not working there. Id' use that mirror to replace the too small oval mirror you have in the hallway.

Nothing wrong with your TV wall. You might have a tendency to over-accessorizing your spaces.

Do you have personal stuff to display? You have stuff, but it kind of looks like random decor to fill space rather than personal things there for a reason. And yes, move the mirror over the fireplace to where the little oval one is. The oval is kind of small for the space, and a larger mirror will reflect more light into the space.

It sounds like you need a vision for the whole space, not just the TV wall. I already see too much contrast between the fireplace and the built-ins. So please post more photos of all of the room and entry, thanks.

It doesn't seem like the TV wall needs anything. You seem to have a lot going on right now, so we recommend leaving the TV wall alone. Included are some TV areas we have done for clients. Please take note of how we have decorated the spaces.
