I think a teal cabinet will look cheap from what I can see but really I need to see the whole kitchen to have any idea .Post the pics here in comments DO NOT start another post.

Seems like you want to go with more of a beach or water theme in here, yes? Can you show us an example of what teal looks like to you? If it is a bright teal I think it will look garish. A deeper, darker teal could work depending on the counter. Will you also paint the legs of the counter seating teal?

Do you want to update all of the countertops or just the island? If all, do you want the island and other counters to match? I assume you are keeping the backsplash?

This is a funky layout but I'm curious to see how paint and new counters can open it up.

With cream colored cabinets you need to lean green with the teal like Minardi showed. If you go too blue the cream will look sick. I would keep the butcher block on the island and look for a cream with subtle gold veining for the counters. But I agree with Minardi, the backsplash will need to be changed.

Thank you all. agree layout is odd and backsplash is bad. project started as the island only accommodates 3 stools. with a new counter top we plan on extending to accomodate 4. so the project mushroomed. would like to use same countertop in both areas and as long as thats happening remove the backsplash. looking at this for island but def open to ideas. thank you again

You do not have room to make the island larger for seating. You can tell that this was once a breakfast room and galley kitchen with peninsula, that someone HAD to have an island, even if that didn't' fit, and even it it made things dysfunctional. It's literally an airport runway, shoehorned in, with too small clearances. If you want to change out things and "fix" things, fix that terrible island that does not work. Put it back to the original layout of a galley with a peninsula, and a breakfast table.

Both of Kandrewspa's pics should be your jumping off point. Find a counter to use everywhere that is the same color as the creme cabinets. Run the counter up the wall as a splash or use tiles the same color as the cabinets and counters. Paint the island teal. It will really be a focal point if you limit the teal to just the island and have all of your other elements blend. If you also do a teal backsplash it is going to start feeling like a circus.

In what direction do you intend to extend the island counter to seat four?

It is easy to play with other people's money and say rip it all out, but that is like pulling a thread on a sweater. You'll have to do new floors and on and on. While it is a totally strange layout, I'd honestly love to cook in there with that amount of counter space. Dreamy!

Since your goal is to seat four, see if you can separate the table part of the countertop from the rest to make a bona fide table for four. It could be a simple matter of adding four screw-in legs to the tabletop understructure.

The factory finish on the island cabinets is high quality with extra detail to the painting. If you have it painted at home, it will never look as sharp. As suggested above, replace the backsplash with greenish blue tiles instead.

I know you are asking for help with color and you are trying to brighten the space. Of the colors you have taped to the island, Peacock Blue is the best, but I would probably go more saturated or less - Teal Ocean or Forget Me Not - instead.

Those kitchen windows are just crying for a banquette where six of you could sit. Are you absolutely committed to keeping the island?

I love the idea of teal but agree it needs to lean green and not navy. Unless your lighting is much brigher and you paint the cabinets a bright white.

What is under this built in next to the windows? Is it the same wood floor?

If it's the same wood as the floors you could remove it opening up the space.. Then create a circular end of the counter to accommodate 4 seats. In island like this...

Well there are 3 here but a slightly bigger island might accommodate 4 small stools.

Your input is appreciated! committed to keeping the island and the tall pantry cabinet so window seating is out (but great idea). did think about separating the end of the island may revisit, also love the round add-on. ill revisit my paint strips-agree with your color suggestions and also putting some color in the built in shelves. thank you!!!

When you look at tiny samples of color they often don't feel nearly as bold as when you look at a huge island or a wall. We pick colors and then find that they are too bright.

Below is a picture of a Sherwin Williams display. When selecting colors for a large application (Wall, Island, Cabinets, floor) it will almost always be in a color from the areas outlined in yellow. I have made exceptions (a deep red or orange or a light clear pink, coral, yellow or yellow green), but those are truly exceptions from the rule (One in every 200 color selections.)

Beware teal, turquoise which can come off cheesy cheap.

    I'd be here.......

S.W Watery or Drizzle, Cambria / Ridgegate and yes to that tile. No to anything brighter, don't make the cabinets appear off or dingy.

Think SANDY beaches. Lose the prep sink.

Thank you-Watery was one our picks originally-will revisit!

FYI - I had teal countertops in the kitchen of the house I built in 1996 (it coordated with the floral wallpaper on the kitchen walls - 90s had some ugly design trends 😂)— my mom tried to talk me out of them - and she was correct! Had to change them just a few years later! Jan has provided some good advice (as usual).

How much space is there between the end of the table area (attached to your island) and the wall? You will need to leave a walking aisle from entrance into kitchen and door out to yard.

If you post a jpeg (photo) your kitchen drawn to scale with dimensions (including dimensions of the openings into kitchen + door to outside + windows + including dimensions for the separate pantry to the side of the windows), people will be able to help you re: trying to accommodate a fourth seat.

Do you use the prep sink on the island? Personally, I wouldn’t want it - but if you/your family uses it quite a bit, maybe it’s important to you (I assume that you have a water filter connected to the smaller faucet - but that could be moved over to your main sink).

That island is an atrocity. It doesnt fit at all. No way would I be doing such major expensive changes to this kitchen without actually fixing it’s BIGGEST PROBLEM.

I love your cabinets. From the photo, they don’t quite reach the ceiling. I’d want some filler or molding to go all the way up to reduce the shadows. Under cabinet lighting, a new backsplash, an be careful with teal. Try a muted shade like some have suggested on your island. Good luck with your project.

    "An atrocity" ?

I think when you have a PRO designation next to your post, an "HU who the heck are you" screen name doesn't cut it. Add a mug shot while you're at it.
