It's a gorgeous flower so hardly a waste of money!! 😊 There have been rumblings over the years in the clematis world that many labeled Jackmanii Superbas are really Gipsy Queen. Regardless of what it is, it is still a stunning clem!!

Thanks for your thoughts. I was thinking maybe Etoile Violette, but I don't have a lot of experience with Clematis, and am just going off photos on the web. These blooms are definitely more maroon than purple/violet. I don't have a place for more vines, so I was careful in my choice, and my garden is blue/violet and white. The other space is taken by Rooguchi, so I have to decide whether to keep or replace this one.

Yes, it does look like 'Etoile Violette'. As Gardengal has mentioned, often 'Jackmanii Superba' is mislabeled and instead is 'Gypsy Queen' as below, a beauty none the less, though ...
