coastal theme kids bedroom

last year

Decorating our grandchildren’s coastal theme bedroom at our coastal summer home. I really like the colors in the surfboard picture and they work well with the wall color and quilts.

Thoughts on mixing the surfboard with the nautical quilt?? Can’t decide. It’s all coastal but does the surfboard picture seem out of place? Thx.

    Thank you, Patricia.

They are four years old. I bought the quilts first. I wanted something fun for them so opted out of a solid colored quilt.

Your choice will work, but could be a bit more vibrant/fun.

the art is cute, but the bedding is overkill... can you filp it over?

I think the quilts and picture look good together. The surfboards and nautical quilts are all beach related so I think they look fine together.

Yes that surf board picture will work nicely with that quilt and offer a room they can grow with.

Have you thought about a decal? Sea theme? Something you can take down later.

The bedding is a miss especially with for 4yr olds. They won't get it. Solid color with art would be fabulous. It will take them into their teens. Ya want something fun find sheets with cartoon sea animals. Over all nothing says child thus far let alone young child.

Coastal suggests the southern coasts, the west and their south coast.

The Nautical suggests Nantucket, Maine etc: )

    Which are you?

For four year old kids? It feels a bit too dreary in your direction.....?

Feels Coastal south or California south

4 yr olds are not really decor savvy but a plain quilt allows some fun for a throw or pillows and also allows them to choose some fun stuff as they age

Personally, I wouldn't get carried away with this? It's a summer home. I wouldn't put a lot of money into it? We have a vacation house, and my grandkids spend little time in the bedrooms. I put some fairy lights on the beds for the kids; they thought I hung the moon! For the most part, they are outside, swimming, hanging with cousins, etc, etc....

I like your current bedding and the surfing poster goes well with the colors of the room. Go for it. Put a special stuffed animal on each bed and call it a day.

My grandparents had a weekend house in the mountains. Nothing in the bedroom was for children except for a toy box with dolls. I loved that room because it felt special to sleep somewhere other than my own bedroom. What did I love and still remember? That my grandma's sheets were crisp and cool, and she made a really tight bed that was fun to try to crawl into without untucking. Make a room that you like, that isn't too dumbed down for a 4 year old and they will figure out what is fun and exciting about it for them.

If you really love the art for you, , keep it, but if returnable , you could find something more juvenile and bright— such as creatures they might actually encounter , but bright & playful - if inexpensive, & replace in a few years.

Otherwise reduce hassle & keep it. I love the idea of a special stuffed animal for each bed— also usually available as sea creatures in your colors. If there’ll be story reading in the room, maybe a bright solid soft cotton or fluffy throw to cozy under together.

I'd get a solid quilt, and fold the patterned quilt at the bottom of the bed instead of the white blanket.

Thank you, everyone, for your suggestions. I should’ve prefaced the post with that this room is also used by older kids, depending on which grandchildren visit. I was trying to accommodate everyone but I love the idea of the decals, boxer pal (I have a sheltie)!

I like simplicity and clean lines. Jen, thanks for your input. I do appreciate; however, those rooms you posted have too much visual clutter for me. These rooms will be used maybe six weeks over the summer with various grandchildren visiting.

I do like the nautical quilts, and the four-year-olds have been on sailboats since they were two. They know every picture on that quilt and are quite savvy about sailing. Ha ha.

The quilt is reversible with stripes, so I may reverse it, the blanket, at the of the bed was just tossed there until I get around to making the bed. Ha ha. I am still getting the house ready for summer living!

I’m returning to the house memorial weekend, and when that room is finished, I will post pictures. Again, I’d like simplicity and not a lot of visual clutter, but the decals can be so cute and really can make a wall come alive.
