if you need a fan, and have a light fixture, try an integrated fixture with both.

I am probably in the minority, but I love ceiling fans! I don't know what your decor style is but I like the modern style three- blade ceiling fans.

How tall are the ceilings going to be in this room? If it's double height and open to the second floor then you definitely need a fan. If the room faces south or west (especially south) and there is going to be a large expanse of glass then you definitely need a fan. If you live in a temperate climate such that you have a lot of nice days when you don't have to run heat or A/C, a fan would be a good idea for the borderline days when you could maybe skip the A/C. Just because you would have liked to have one in your current house doesn't mean it's a necessity in your new house. Consider the circumstances and if you still can't decide, have it wired for one, you can always put a chandelier there instead.

Ceiling fans are not chic, but do help with keeping AC costs down here in the South.

Do you use ceiling fans? We have ceiling fans in almost all rooms and they are on daily year round. Our living area has high ceilings. We have 2 and use them all year round. In the winter we put them on reverse to bring the warm air down.

We have no idea of the space but I fore sure do not ever like them with lights nad the size of the space and your style dictate the fan . Never a TV over a FP if at all possible either . I do not think a 9' ceiling needs a fan but I need more info.
