Fireplace suggestions for great room

last year

We just renovated our house by taking down the wall between the great room and the kitchen, redoing the kitchen, and replacing all floors. This included removing a 3 way fireplace in the wall between the kitchen and the great room. We now would like to put a linear electric fireplace on the wall opposite the kitchen. There will be a television above the linear fireplace where we have one now. We want open shelving on each side, thinking in white oak like the island and coffee bar in the kitchen. The great room wall where this will go is 19.5 feet. There is a challenge with the ceiling being vaulted - 10 feet at highest.

Questions:

1. Should the shelves extend to each side of the room?

2. Suggestions related to fireplace extending into the ceiling?

3. Suggestions on material around fireplace - drywall?

4. Other thoughts?

The first photo is looking from the great room to the kitchen. The second photo is the wall of the great room where fireplace/tv/shelves will be.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

If you want to use the fireplace for heat and you don't want a mantel, you might want to fur out the wall anyway due to the heat output/ possible electronics damage.

We just put a 100" linear dimplex fireplace in our basement under our 85" TV. We liked dimplex as the height is only 16", which allowed us to mount the TV at an appropriate height. Anything else would've been too high. Here's ours, for consideration.

Than you for both of these suggestions. In answer to the first response, yes electric fireplace. Can you please advise where I might source the metal? I live in Ontario, Canada. Thanks

Many can be mounted on , or inside framing. I'd build around it low, full wall width, and not worry the vault at all. Almost every single one will need 12" distance from the floor for either install, and 12" for a tv above.

Check the installation specs before you buy. The dimplex we bought did not have any clearances aside from ceiling. But it did have a heat map that showed how hot the space would get above it based on distance from the front of fireplace. So if we had mounted the TV above with no mantel and recessed the fireplace, we would have had high temps to deal with.

The manual also recommended a dedicated circuit for it. Maybe not all brands require that. Our manual said you could try using a regular outlet but if things start tripping then a dedicated circuit would be required. We had zero intention of dealing with that possibility/ redoing electrical once it was done.

    Marie,

I can provide the metal and the fireplace. There are a great many options. It's best to take such discussions offline. Please email me at: greg@fireplacetreatments.com

For the most minimalist appearance, I recommend you disconnect the heater when a TV is installed above the fireplace. If you want the heat, we can use a matching metal mantel above the fireplace or install it as a console, like @anj_p. Keep in mind that these heaters are only 5,000 watts, which is pretty much like a blow dryer, so they don't really put out much heat.

@anj_p, Your application looks great, I would be interested in hearing how the heater on your Dimplex fireplace performs.

There are also pre-designed wall systems like these...although you would probably want the TV a little lower:

The metal walls are easy to assemble and the patterns and panel sizes are custom, so they can be square, rectangular, vertical, horizontal, or random patterns in a variety of finishes.

Here's an example of a similar project with an insulated shelf to protect the TV above the linear electric fireplace and matching wall shelves on the right. I created a few different patterns with the metal panels. They can be made with and without the rivets.
