House remodel - flooring color

last year

Hi, we're in the process of a complete update of our house (in California): all floors, paint cabinets (instead of replacing), update hardware, new appliances, new hardware, etc. So, we kind of have a clean slate (only constraints are really style of house, existing granite, and window shutters (off-white unfortunately). Our big dilemma right now is on floors. We're going engineered hardwood after lots of debate and keep going back to California Classics Mediterranean line 9.5 inch planks (also considered the Provensa Tresor 9.5 in planks and Villa Caprisi 9.5 in planks)

Any thoughts or opinions on flooring color? We're currently leaning towards California Classics Mediterranean 9.5" Bellet, but very torn. We want something light, with some warmth. Previously had tile and a darker hardwood. House is a 'Mediterranean' style house with stucco exterior, big rooms, two story. So we don't want to go with a modern look but want to look current and fresh.

btw: main kitchen cabinets will be painted a warm white (TBD...white dove, cloud white, and simply white are all contenders and island will be painted a dark gray or gray/blue (TBD as well). We are also considering changing counter from granite to quartzite (Taj Mahal leading contender), but I don't think that will materially change any decisions as that one has similar tones as our existing counter, just more muted.

See pictures for existing granite, sample of floors (one with our granite sample, that has paint colors on it too :-). Any input would be greatly appreciated on floor selection! (especially if anyone has input on California Classics Mediterranean line and the Bellet color!). Other input welcome as well :-)

I would not paint your cabinets.

When we redid our kitchen in LA in 2018, in a Spanish style house, we went with new wood stained cabinets. White did not fit with the look of the house. It was a scary decision, specially when our kitchen designer said it was the first wood stained kitchen he had done in 7 years! Everyone in LA was doing white kitchens with white-gray marble counters, but it really wasn't right for that house. I guess I was a trend setter, as wood cabinets are now in and I'm sure plenty in LA are ripping out white cabinets to replace with stained wood to keep up with the new trend!

I would change the counters and backsplash.

leave the cabinets and counter. change the backsplash. Id get a little more red undertone in the floor but the 2nd one above is okay....can you bring in some less yellow floor samples??? a new backsplash will do wonders. the counter is attractive....work with it. Good Luck.

I agree with some of the comments above in that I think that your cabinets are very pretty. The backsplash does need to be simpler and less yellow, at least according to what I see on my monitor. I liked the colors in the first floor sample you posted.

Same thoughts here. It is the backsplash that is jarring.

The rest of the kitchen looks very nice.

Thank you so far for the amazing feedback! Backsplash is definitely getting replaced even if counters are not. We have been a little torn on painting cabinets but everyone seems to be doing it these days (although yes, I know wood is coming back in...ours are just a little beat up andyou can't tell from pictures) and we wanted to lighten up the room. Hence the lighter floors as well.

btw...first floor is the california classics mediterranean 9.5 bellet. Second is provenza tresor Diamonte.

Agree: leave the cabinets alone, change the backsplash. Of the two flooring samples, I like the second one better, but without a photo of it running up to the cabinets, it's hard to say for sure.
