Another wild guess: maybe Centaurea americana, American Basket-flower.

the flower- and seedheads (at 2 o clock and 4 o cklock) look very Cirsium-ish

the foliage looks thistle-y

Tall Thistle, Cirsium altissimum. BTW, Centaurea americana is now Plectocephalus americanus.😃

Old world Centaurea remain Centaurea. Synonyms are fine. Please try to remember to get photos of the undersides of the leaves when photographing thistles or plants with thistle-like leaves. Native thistles have leaves with white underesides.

Cirsium and Centaurea are in the same tribe in Asteraceae Cardueae, but different subtribes.
