Bostik MVP4 under Coretec vinyl flooring?

Our washing machine flooded our finished garage area in February. Restoration is going slowly. Currently we are waiting for our Coretec flooring which is on order.

Our installer put down two coats of Bostik MPV4 to take care of an issue with moisture in the cement pad.

Today, Coretec finally responded to a question I had asked a week ago about the Bostik. I had read about how the floors need to be really flat before installing LVP and it doesn’t look flat to me with the MVP4, so I called to inquire. Coretec advised me to call Bostik and ask about its designated use.

I called Bostik and they said it is not meant for floating floors, it is designed to be used beneath glue-down installations of engineered, solid and bamboo hardwood flooring.

I have this sick feeling in the pit of my stomach. The gentleman said that before installing a floating floor the Bostik would have to be removed. I don’t think that this stuff can ever be removed.

Please weigh in if you know anything about this. We haven’t spoken to the installer about this yet but will call him tomorrow. Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

I have never used MVP4. Cannot comment on it's usage. But to remove any rubber or glue, we remove it with a shredder or scraper attachment on a buffer, then grind it down with diamonds.

MVP4 is a vapor retarder. It still allows moisture to permeate. I believe Coretec requires a moisture barrier that does not allow moisture to permeate through like 6 mil plastic. MVP4 looks like it is firm enough to lay Coretec over it without causing too much movement to cause joint separation. Aside from fixing the low spots and bringing the substrate to the required flatness. You can just lay 6 mil plastic over it and tape the joints to satisfy Coretec's installation guidelines. You do need a continuos layer of air sealing. Be sure to tape the joints and run the plastic up the walls. The extra plastic gets trimmed off after flooring is installed.

Ask him how he plans to make this right? It is on him. If you are supplying material be prepared for him to walk out the door.

We signed a contract with him and paid him almost half up front. He placed the order for the lvp, which we will ask him to stop tomorrow until we can figure out next steps. I feel sick.....this thick heavy rubbery stuff is on there forever, I think.

He might suggest to switch to an engineered wood product, but we didn't want a glue down product in case there ever is another issue with leak or moisture. The last floor was a floating floor and came up quite easily when we had the flooding.

He has stellar reviews on yelp, although reading them again, it's likely he has more experience with wood floors than lvp. He's been such a pleasure to work with up to this point and seemed so knowledgable. I do think he will want to work with us towards a solution, that is my sense.

Although I anticipate that he will insist that this will work, I'm very concerned that if we let him put down coretec on top of the bostik, there may not be a problem right away, but there might be down the line. And if the floor fails, I imagine that the warranty is voided with the use of the bostik.

I don't see the reasoning by having to remove the MVP, unless it's a substantial substrate issue. Check how flat it really is...or isn't. Though I've never tried this before, but perhaps it's possible to use more MVP to take care of of minor issues. After all you are using a floating floor. It doesn't attach to the MVP. The Bostik comment doesn't make much sense unless it wasn't explained thoroughly.

Hi Uptown Floors, Doesn't using Bostik void the warranty siince it's not designated for vinyl flooring? So that if there are any issues, Coretec is not responsible? This is a big concern for me. I feel like the installer should know what the acceptable products to use are. It makes me wonder about how much experience he has with vinyl flooring installation.

Thank you, G & S! I appreciate your input. This has been suggested by several installers in a separate flooring forum as well, both of whom said they have done it over Bostik, and I think this will be what we do too.
