Agree, that wall is really busy! If the structure allows, I would open up the entertainment area--create one large recessed area all the way up to the crown molding, all painted white. Then add a few shelves that hold just a couple of decorative objects and favorite books. If you ever did want a TV in that area, you could remove the shelves, hang the TV a little bit higher, and not have it squished by a cabinet looming right over it. Paint the wall above the fireplace the same white as the trim, so you have a cohesive look there, not a checkerboard of trim and wall colors.

What is going on underneath the TV, with the little doors and the black box? That is contributing a lot of visual clutter. Do you need that storage, or could you replace the doors with a solid baseboard with the same detailing as what is under the fireplace?

The little black box under the TV is a speaker, no I don't need it. I don't even need the TV, it is never turned on. The little cabinets on either side have no purpose. Great suggestions. Thank you.

I don't know if this is feasible, but what the heck. Replace the entertainment area with windows and let the fireplace have it's own space.

You could also paint the entire thing white making it appear like a built in.

You could remove all the trim and have a plain wall. It is hard to see the depth, maybe it is shallow than it looks.
