Early Bloomers are such a Delight!

last modified: last year

Here in Colorado we need the Canadians and other early bloomers to help us with our early rose fix.

Robusta was first out of the gate for me on May 17th. Here she is a week later may 24th. She still has tons of buds to come so is not at peak but I just love seeing her out my window. Sprawling shape this year but we only cut out the dead stuff or too long stuff so she is going every which way.

Winnipeg Parks bloomed second on May 19th. Here she is today, May 24th. She is now 8 ft wide so will need to be trimmed back after this first show. She was planted with an expected diameter of 6 ft and is now encroaching on her neighbors. Cutting is going to be tough since she is a continuous bloomer and doesn't really have a pause between flowers. So whenever we do it we will be cutting off buds and flowers.

Much to my surprise Forth of July is 3rd. This was it's first year being cane hardy since previous years she died to the ground. Planted 4/19 so it has taken over 5 yrs to hold on to some cane. Probably because this was an easy winter.

Naturally I cut some for the house. :-)

Those are also beautiful. I love the sprawling look of robusta As I think that's her natural habit. Everything is going to look great this year for you I have a feeling!

    Thanks Melissa and Vaporvac!

I am hopeful for a good year. The main bed looks like this. You can see why I love my cane hardy Canadian (Winnipeg Parks)!

Fourth of July looks like this. You can see a Fourth of July Bloom 2/3 up. But at the very top right that looks like a Dr. Huey to me. Just have to see how much of this cane is Fourth of July and how much is Dr. Huey.

I've waited five years, this is it's sixth, for Fourth of July to start to perform. I love the flowers but I think I would have chosen something else if I knew about the wait. Just not sure what because not too many of my roses are cane hardy. If these blooms start frying then it is definitely being taken out.

So bummed! Fourth of July is mostly Dr. Huey.

Here it is with the Dr. Huey taken off the trellis. Fourth of July is one center cane and some of the small stuff at the base.

I reclipped the Dr. Huey to the outside of the trellis so we can enjoy the blooms while deciding what to do.

They are so intertwined at the base that it will be hard to separate them.

We had previously dug out a huge Dr. Huey from this spot and obviously did not get all the root chunks. Fourth of July is an own root rose that we planted in it's place. Since then every year we take out Dr. Huey sprouts but obviously have missed some.

Winnipeg Parks continues to delight. She has been blooming so much that we have had to start deadheading her.

Main rose bed from above. We just took the shade covers off the new roses. One of which is Victorian Memory, a band from High Country Roses. She is a little tiny thing in the back to the left of Winnipeg Parks. Being Canadian we are expecting great things from her.

Since we need to shape Winnipeg Parks, because she is impinging on her neighbors, we decided to start cutting off larger branches. But rather than throw them out we are putting them in the house to enjoy the blooms.

If they make it in Winnipeg they are definitely hardy and resilient! If a plant grows in mom’s garden Im all for trying it in mine.
