Both are very pretty. I can't remember ever having so many up and down buds. Some normal, some quite tall and some a silly mixture..

I have at least one dormant with flowers in the foliage - Siloam Double Classic. There will likely be many more shorties of all foliage types.

My Ice Cream Emperor has always been just above the foliage as well. However, like Kay, I am seeing more inconsistent scapes, some on the same plant. Late freezes maybe?

Kate - What I'm seeing here when the scape heights are mixed is that the tall scapes are in the middle and very short scapes are on the outside of clump. I would think in both instances of below zero temps and late freezes, scapes in the middle were more insulated from the cold.

Interesting. Below zero in TN is certainly unusual, but I wonder what your March temps were. February here was among the mildest on record. March here was closer to normal, with some temps approaching 20. Last year, we went down to 14, and I blame the very cold March (after a near-record February) for last year's malaise.

I am seeing some short scapes too.

Mantis - The early part of March was mild, but we had night temps in the low to high 20s for a few days the last two weeks of March.

It rare we even get to zero in Nashville winters, much less 3 below zero. And we had several days when the temps were less than 10. Many winters, we only have a few nights that make it into the teens.

I have several that are often in the foliage, but most are not. Most of the scapes for Laura Harwood are in the foliage, Paiges Pinata often is, Smoky Mt. Autumn has some in the foliage, and I don't recall which others. Sometimes it is do to needing split. Two years ago I decided I grew daylilies for the flower not the foliage, so when the scapes were ready to bloom, I carefully cut back the foliage.
