Kitchen layout dilemma

Hello All,

I have a sizable space dedicated to the kitchen in a new build (approx 12x11’). I’m finding it akward to work with, as it is too wide for a galley, and yet too small for an island or pennisula. How should I configure this space? I welcome your thoughts.

" as it is too wide for a galley, and yet too small for an island or pennisula. "

Yet you want to box it in with not one but two walls? Where is the electric? Where is the plumbing? Can these move? From my perspective the rear door is causing most of your issues,

Who is designing the house? I should think that the design of the house and kitchen should be made concurrently. You shouldn't be constrained like that in a new build. Ask your architect what the thinking was in this configuration.

I would swap the media space for the kitchen to gain two walls for cabinetry and appliances, and space for an island work surface. Put the “media” area in another section of the home.

    Thank you all!

Since I’m getting excellent feedback, I’m providing a more detailed rendering.

I am attached to the kitchen’s location and its proximity to outdoor dining. I‘m in SoCal and intend to sped lots of time out there. I will likely have a grill, drink fridge, etc. setup :)

What I’m not liking is all the wasted space in the kitchen, and how I have to navigate around it when coming in the front door with groceries.

A possible solution I am considering is eliminating part of the pantry, and putting in a ginormous island. Is a 6’ deep island too much? And if I do this, or something similar, where do I put my range/cooktop, sink, etc?

    I appreciate your advice!

Where do you see putting the fridge and stove?

Diana is right. If this is a new build, why are there so many constraints relative to the kitchen? The kitchen is probably the most important room in the house. As Diana says there's no reason why the entire house shouldn't be designed as a whole.

Sadly, this is a fire rebuild, that comes with soooo many constraints, including squarefootage, footprint, etc. That said, I may have solved my dilemma, by abutting a bar, against a large island. It comes with its challenges, such as unreachable space in the middle of the island. Below is a plan, as well as a rendering (ignore the stairs). And I have something like this in mind for the odd wall, flanking the bar: Eager to hear your thoughts!

Your latest design works pretty well. I might fiddle with the elements on each side of the island/bar, but in general I think the kitchen layout is functional and open to the ancillary spaces. But I am a little confused about the entry and rooms on the left side of the plan, can you clarify?

Thanks for your feedback. There is understair storage/mudroom in the left corner, and right of it is a powder room
