The primary improvement I see for the new open layout and first dining layout is to delete the island seating. There isn't room and the more comfortable table and chairs are right there.

A thing I do not like in any of the plans is that the front door faces partly a wall, partly an opening, that doesn't really line up with anything.

Most people may not notice, I just find it unpleasant.

I have some suggestions as im planning to do a closed floor plan also. I would to do a banquette style dining area and a longer island. The above photo is a rough draft of the design, but i plan to have built in cabinets on either side of the table for more storage space. as another commenter also mentioned, maybe pull the wall back to the left so its not blocking the sight.

Open or closed kitchen depends, in my opinion, on your household size and lifestyle. Small kids? Teens? Do you usually cook from scratch, or do a lot of packaged meals? Do you host dinner parties? Do you usually eat together or separately? How you and your family use the kitchen matters a lot to getting the best design.

One size never fits all.
