The Angelica is perennial.

Which Angelica are you referring to @Jay 6a Chicago as I have only experienced biennial Angelicas e.g. Giga and Vicars Mead. And all I have read about Dahurica is that it is biennial as well.

I looked up Angelica dahurica on wikipedia and they say it's a perennial. Plant Delights says it's short lived. Another source says biennial. Im sure it's biennial and wikipedia's information is wrong. Sorry for unintentionally leading you on.

Crazy weather here. It was 7C - 44F the other morning and we are having heat warnings all week. Some plants are performing well others not so much.

Actually the hydrangea that I think you are 'spying' (on the bottom left) is the Big Leaf hydrangea "Summer Crush". You can't see it but it is actually in a container (permanently) which gets shuffled into the garage in November and then brought outside come late March or so. It has been an excellent performing hydrangea the past 3 seasons ie lots of blooms, hardy and compact in size.

@erasmus_gw, I wanted to have this plant this season but I couldn't source it in time. I love my v. bonariensis but I am getting a teeny bit tired of them...too tall and too messy each early summer wih the "offspring" coming up everywhere.

Rouge, looking at it again it looks like it has larger flowers and leaved than my 2 arborescens plants that are blooming for the 1st time. I read that some arborescens don't have the larger sterile flowers, but thankfully mine do. Are you saying your Angelica also bloomed last year too? I thought the biennial Angelica were monocarpic and died after flowering? How are your Ipomopsis rubra plants coming along? I don't have any this year, but I have the hot red Royal Catchfly and Salvia coccinea.

No Jay, the two dahurica I have are now in their second year and I expect/demand flowers from them in 2024 ;).

(I have had some gigas not bloom till the third season...definitely short lived perennials, at best biennial)

How are your Ipomopsis rubra plants coming along?

I will always remember that it was you who corrected me re the name for this plant ;) as I kept thinking it was Scarlet Gilia i.e. Ipomopsis aggregata

Anyways I love them and I do all I can to encourage "offspring" each Fall.

I have weeds and more weeds, but amongst the weeds:

This meconopsis is an interesting color since it's more purple than blue (a friend offered 3 of them as a seedlings when she managed to germinate them years ago ) . They don't bloom every year in this forested location but I am loath to move them since they survived here these 8 years or so.

These look to me like our native columbine, aquilegia formosa but I don't know how they ended up here among my mutt columbines, so maybe they're just look alikes.

I like these tulips and the moose didn't eat them, yay!

These are columbine I grew from seed after my friend shared some, I think they're the rocky mountain columbine, they are very cheerful even though they face downwards. They self seed in a charming way along the edges (as they are shortish), if I can keep the native geraniums and equisetum at bay.

Lat62, LOVE your treed setting and your plants, that poppy is quite an amazing color! With being so close to the arctic circle, your plants would now be enjoying "almost" 24 hours of sunshine. :)

Lat62, love your plants and the combinations. The Equisetum looks cool with the flowers growing through it. It looks like you've got other native wildflowers in there, like Actaea and Primula perhaps? I like your weeds too. They are weeds I normally never see. It all looks so peaceful and secluded. That's the darkest Meconopsis I've ever seen. I grew some columbines that were hybrids of the blue Rocky Mountain Columbine and our native Aquilegia canadensis. Thank you for sharing!

Rouge, your Standing Cypress is so vibrant. They look like they are standing at attention over the ginormous Allium and giving it it's last rights. Are those Verbena bonariensis under the Allium? I hope my 2 Royal Catchfly have nice blooms. They look a bit stressed from the hot weather. They are slow to establish, and it takes for the plants to reach their full potential. I've tried growing the Fire Pink, Silene virginica. It never grew or flowered. It won't tolerate taller plants.

I am always impressed at how "eagle eyed" you are with posted photos.

I have Vbs all over :(. I will pull lots of them once they are taller as I find it easier to remove them en mass when they are more developed.

Here's the Lollipop verbena bonariensis again, Rouge. I think last year it bloomed all summer. My regular tall verbena bonariensis plants are blooming now and I think I like them as well as the Lollipop. Lollipop is less wild looking, more compact.

I bought this lily for the name, Miss Peculiar. It is either as big as or bigger than a lily I bought for its huge bloom, Big Brother.

Fama Deep Blue scabiosa. Grew these from seed last year but only in pots. I had one survive winter and this year it is much prettier than last year. I think I'll try some more of them and try them in the ground. Ten tiny seeds were about $5. I don't know if they come true from seed but my plant is putting out the tiny seeds. I took this pic and in my camera it looked pretty blue but on the computer it is much purpler. So frustrating not to be able to get the true color. Supposedly it's more heat tolerant...I don't know yet.

Im done starting sweet peas indoors…I had a few extra presoaked seeds when i started my other seeds indoora this winter. I tossed them into the vegetable garden in the SNOW just to see what would happen. this guy is far outperforming the transplants I coddled through february and march.

Once more geranium psilostemon, just because I enjoy it so much.

A geranium seedling that came up many years ago, when I had more kinds. It looks rather like Geranium x oxonianum ’Thurstonianum’, maybe the petals are a bit wider. Anyway, I am quite happy with it. It blooms all summer long.

You are correct ie those are the 2 plants that survived the winter (I dont think any of our other 'thousands' of V bonariensis are even close to a foot tall).

A few more... I'd say this is my favorite time of year ! And we have warm weather to boot :))

Thanks for the compliment on the wooded setting, FrozeBud, allthough we have lost several 100+ year old white spruce to the bark beetle :( but now I have more sun ! And yes, we are of course still at pretty much peak sunshine 2 days out from solstice! Happy midsummer to all who celebrate that :))

I also like the way the flowers rise above, but still have worries it will choke them out, so I pluck out what I can as time and weather allows ! And I have my tongue a little in my cheek to complain about my native geraniums, but again worry they will choke things out because they are so prolific.

Geranium erianthum, our Alaska native geranium - the rose is our native prickly rose that the moose usually eat but this year they left me a few Rosa acicularis - It smells nice!

Trumpet Vines are very agressive. Ive been trying to kill the vine in the picture for 10 years. I have it far enough away from my nice plants that it won't cause trouble.

And the Scabiosa is pretty purple…I usually see them pale blue.

Peren all - Those two Iris - love them, the color and are they near each other? Nice combo. And the Coreopsis ’Sunray' it's a double? And it’s not flopping? It definitely is very cheerful. I used to grow a coreopsis like that…Lancelota type? Different name- a single…yours is enticing me to want to grow it again. [g]

pm the two Iris are quite far apart in the garden but I do think they would look really good in close proximity to one another. C. grandiflora 'Sunray' is a double and it flowers for such a long time. I need to deadhead them but they continue to bloom regardless. They bloom themselves to death after 2-3 years but I let a seedhead or two develop and have never been without them. The seed is large and can be direct sown where desired. It has been so hot that I just can't spend time in the sun to deadhead them. If it has not been scorching hot it has been raining. The weeds are really happy too!

I hope the weather evens out for you there....SOON! We're supposed to get a break from the 90s and the high humidity late Thursday and have a few days of low 80s and lower humidity. It usually is that by mid August at least is is cooler at night but I haven't been able to depend on that in the past 5 years at least.

You have such beautiful plants and all that room and you take care of it all so well! I'm going to try that Sunray for sure!

@gdinieontarioz5, I deadheaded completely a few of the previously pictured spigelias a little less than a month ago and the rebloom now is good. (And as I recall, with another dead heading, they will push out flowers into October).

@rouge21 Thank you! I will try to deadhead mine in the future. Mine is still blooming a bit. It is to dark and wet for a picture now.

That is great, Rouge! I am a fan now too. Such a beautiful plant, and so floriferous. I had expected it to be a once bloomer with maybe a scattered rebloom.
