Looks Like an Early Peak

When I looked at my backyard today, it was full of blooms and looked like peak. My front garden and my side gardens are not there yet, but close. Normally my peak is June 15-18.

Men in Black - The deer have done some munching on this one, but left me most of the scapes.



Ghost Gifts - This is a good growing evergreen. The flowers have always been much smaller than the 5 inches registered. I won't be taking it, and it needs a new home.


Clown Parade is still parading.


Blue Swallowtail is another one with blooms so much smaller than the registered 5.5 inches. Here they are only 4 inches. The eye is not very blue either. A dormant, it's down on buds this year because of grub trouble, but it has had bud counts in the high teens and 20s the previous two years. It's not moving with me and needs a new home.


Yoga Man is moving with me.


Grandma's Smile X Bubblegum Delicious 1 is shorter than previous years and not as well-budded. It looks like grubs may have gotten to it. A neighbor walked my garden two days ago and picked it as her favorite daylily in the garden. It's one of my favorites too, and it's going in the suitcase.



Destined to See X Green Mystique - This thing used to have 30-40 buds and five-way branching, and this year bud count is pitiful - another one the grubs got. I'm taking this one and trying to rehabilitate it.



Perseus' Sandals X Jumping Jack Flash was at its peak today.

    I think my peak will be a week early too, not sure yet. Sadly, I will probably be out of town for it. Perseus' Sandals X Jumping Jack Flash is my absolute favorite of these. Such a great color and form. WOW!

    Yoga Man is interesting and All American Chief sure makes a statement.

    I like Yoga Man and American Chief a lot. I also agree with your decision to take Destined to See x Green Mystique seedling. It's got very nice individual blooms and looks great in a clump. I've always appreciated the time I had growing Green Mystique when I was a newbie. It was very forgiving and made me feel like I could grow daylilies........You know my daylilies seem early too. I do a survey on June 28th every year about what's blooming and what's not, so it will be interesting to see what reality is versus perception............Maryl

    Perseus seedling does look marvelous today. I am glad you are taking the yellow seedling, it has such nice form and love the shade of yellow.

    All American Chief makes a statement every year, what’s not to like?

    Sherry - Thanks for your comments! I just hope the yellow seedling can recover. Some daylilies lose their vigor permanently after having their roots eaten by grubs. Evergreens especially have a hard time bouncing back. The yellow seedling is a semi-evergreen with lots of dormancy, so I hope it will be rejuvenated when grown in a grub-free environment.

    Wow! Your garden exploded suddenly! Those clumps are amazing. I agree with everyone about the Green Mystique seedling. Hopefully it can be rehabilitated. It deserves that chance! Bill Norris just glows. You really did good with the Perseus’ Sandal seedling. Love the height. Great post of pretty clumps.

    Kate - Two of the seedling beds have been full of blooms for a week, but the rest of the daylilies in the back did seem to all burst into bloom at once today.

    Peak already?????Lovely grouping of blooms together. Clump shots are always good to see. Your garden looks good even with the deer issue. Hope you find homes for the ones you don't want to take. Are you hybrizing this year since you plan to move in a couple of months?
