Clearance in front of range

Our contractor’s initial plan has 42” between the countertop and a mini island. When the door to the range is open (the door takes up ~24”) the remaining 18” seems too tight. If I am pulling a heavy baking dish or a 3/4 sheet pan loaded with food out of a hot oven, I want enough space to be able to squat down. 46-48” therefore seems like a better amount of clearance.

How much clearance do you have in front of your range?

Needs to be 48” measured from the protrusion, not the cabinet box.

Thanks @zumi. Even measuring from the front of the appliance and assuming a single user, 42” still doesnt seem like enough space to me. 48” is just enough IMO, even for a single user.

Post the plan here so maybe we can help? Normally contractors don’t design kitchens

@HALLETT & Co. kitchen contractor. This is just a very early draft; there are a number of things we will be changing, but it gets the range location roughly right (it should move a bit toward the end of the countertop run). We are trying to determine whether we can really fit even a small island or not - the current clearances are insufficient on all sides of the island depicted here. We might do a small butcher block topped table or a cart or something, not a permanent island.

The room at the lower left is the mudroom; top of the image leads to the entry hall; to the right of the kitchen is the dining room.

My current kitchen was designed, on purpose, to be a one cook kitchen. I have the 42” clearance... but by the time you account for handles and such it’s less than 42”. (Especially since I went with a pro style range and it sticks out a bunch) I feel it’s perfectly fine when it’s just me in there, but if my hubby tries to help me in the kitchen it’s too tight. But, I don’t like help in the kitchen... like... get out of my way. LOL! My last kitchen was a beautiful example of a multi cook kitchen and I had 48” clearances and it really made things nice. Our 5 children were all teens and young adults while we lived there, and it really was nice and never cramped. So, if you CAN do the 48” I would recommend it. (Side note: even in my last kitchen with all the space, I still shooed people out of my kitchen when I was working. I just prefer to work alone when I’m cooking. For me, it’s the distraction of people talking when I’m working, but that’s my own issue. LOL!) With my current kitchen, some space compromises had to be made for us to maintain a smaller footprint for our home, and in doing so, I knowingly placed my range and dishwasher on opposite sides of the same aisle with the sink and dishwasher in my island and my range behind me if I’m standing at the sink. I knew it was a “no-no” when I did it, but I did it anyways. So, if you consider that my oven handle sticks out up to 5” past the cabinetry, and the handle of my dishwasher sticks out too... I ACTUALLY only have a 33” clearance pinch point there. Or if you open the oven door, there’s less than 2 feet between the open oven and the dishwasher. Also, if the dishwasher door is fully open there’s only 12” clearance in the aisle. Those are horrible clearances! And yes, I did that on purpose. I have little work arounds. I don’t actually feel cramped working alone in my kitchen if the oven door is open, but if I’m unloading the dishwasher I’m almost always standing on the side where the vast majority of dishes get put away... but there are always a few things that have to go on the other side of the dishwasher but I set them on the counter, and wait until I close the dishwasher before I put them away. So, little compromises like that and they work fine... but only for a single cook kitchen. We are empty nesters now, so it works for us, but it’s definitely better to have 48” clearances. Hope that helps!

Thanks @skmom. We are a multi cook family so more clearance is important I think.

Yes, if you’re a multi cook family, 48” makes a WORLD of difference!
