Was he drinking when he did the kitchen backsplash?

Were the tiles from different lots?

Did he learn on the kitchen and perfected it by the laundry room?

He did the kitchen first so quite possibly.

The kitchen looks terrible but I think the shadow of the cabinets over the tile in the laundry room is partially why that space looks better. Also, the grout in the kitchen looks lighter and that doesn't help. Was it freshly grouted when you took the photo?

We used the same grout for both but the Cle Seasalt (laundry) is lighter than the Cle Weathered White (kitchen) so there is less contrast. It was freshly grouted and same day the photo was taken.

This is our inspiration photo for the kitchen backsplash from Studio Mcgee and they note it’s Cle Weathered White tile and BM Creamy White cabinets.

He needs to tear it out, repair the wall behind it, and buy you some tile. What does your contract say?

Contract doesn’t specify on how the install should look so unfortunately not much. I think we’ll be proceeding with tearing it out and redoing.

It's the tile. The tiles were different colors, and different gauges. The kitchen is more like a standard zellige, with more warping, and out of square tile. This is the install all over Pin, minus the extra bit of grout not being cleaned off. The laundry is a more refined tile, that is flatter, and squarer both. A tile that is acceptable as intentionally warped, with different thicknesses, and banana waved, is always going to be installed with varying planes.

Update: contractor wants to remove individual tiles across the kitchen backsplash vs. tearing out the whole thing. We think they’ll end up needing to remove over 50% of the tile to reconfigure appropriately. Has anyone approached/experienced this as a way to correct a zellige tile install? Appreciate all the feedback.

First these are "hand made" tile and so never perfect and 50% offset just adds to the mess . The tile choice was IMO wrong for a kitchen backsplash where cleanability is a must . I never understand a teaxtured tile in a kitchen or bathroom . I am a clean freak and those are just a PITA to clean The kitchen picloks like the grount was not cleaned up when you took the pic either
