I was just in central PA a couple weeks ago. I saw various roadside conifers - mainly Norway spruces but definitely some concolors in the mix - still showing brownish-red burnt foliage from winter salt overspray. I think very few conifers qualify as truly resistant to salt spray. I have vague memories of my relatives who live on Virginia Beach's 'Gold Coast' telling me that the Japanese black pines were some of the only trees they could grow...mind you, you see fewer of those than you used to because of their susceptibility to beetle infestations. Apparently Massachusetts is considering banning them.

The notion of any species of Homeria or Moraea becoming invasive that far north (or I should just say, that far EAST of the Pacific coast) seems utterly laughable to me. I would love to know how they got on the list. They are mostly zone 9, Mediterranean climate plants that would perish outside of a greenhouse even down here. Probably just mindlessly copied from a federal list that was based on their potential to be invasive in California.

Invasiveness is sometimes overplayed, even way overplayed -- in keeping w/the scare-mongering culture. Norway spruce, at one time even recommeded for forestry plantings, is now often looked down on for not being "native" and the result that it is not planted nearly as much anymore. East US lacks a native reliable spruce. Eventually all the impressive and reliable Norway spruces will die out and few if any spruces to replace them.
