Iceberg drooping rose buds

Not the best photo, it was hard to get it to be in focus, but you can see the drooping buds and over on the right some perfectly good ones. The cane this shoot was coming from was the oldest on the plant. I've removed it, but is this just a one off issue with that cane not providing enough food for the buds or a sign of something more? I am still fairly new to rose gardening. We're in the Pacific Northwest.

IF the rest of the plant seems OK, then that stem had wind damage/varmint damage/borer damage/girdling damage. Watch the remaining stems for any sudden wilting. If the whole stem wilts, check for breakage or chewing at the *bottom* of the stem. You may have a vole or ground squirrel problem. Higher up, borers will leave a telltale entrance hole, and the stem will have a tunnel bored (duh, lol) vertically. Everything above the borer damage will wilt. If you cut the stem you will see that hole in the center. Continue cutting lower until the stem is solid. You will have cut out the part containing the borer.

Top of the plant looks stressed....Either not enough water as Vaporvac mentioned or your stem got damaged...

I think stem damage is the issue, though I don't know what caused it. There was a bit of a gnarled lump at the juncture of the older, original cane and this newer cane that's drooping.

@Vaporvac Z6-OhioRiverValley This made me smile. We in the PNW call June Junuaray, and it's living up to its name. Buckets over the last few week. :o)

The voles got the roots? One of my penstemon just had a similar problem. It continued to collapse, so I gently pulled on the top of the plant a bit, and voila, no roots. Eaten up. Diane

@diane Brakefield We do have lots of critters and I'll keep an eye out any more damage.
