did you consider a little research before deciding on leylands? This forum is overflowing with negatives about this tree posted over the last 20 years. You're in TENN right? They'll sell anything down there. Search fact sheets for Ga, Ark, Miss, & Ala, disease warnings galore.

The good news is they are still small and minimal investment. Toss them out and conisider a broad-leaved evergreen shrub more suitable to the confined space.

These are not the correct trees to plant in that area. Leylands are fast growers and get huge.. As a result, they wont fair well with pruning over time. Have you considered Laurel or Aucuba instead?

It looks way too sunny a spot for Aucuba, especially in Tennessee.

[eyeroll emoji] The problem with these in most of the CONUS has more to do with the parents being from coastal California and Alaska, than it being an 'artificial' hybrid, which the vast majority of horticulturally relevant hybrids are, and 'bi-generic', which is debatable...both parents had actually been in the Cupressus genus for a while, and either way are now considered close branches of the New World Cypress.

Anyhow I agree, wrong plant for Tennessee, and wrong plant for the intended purpose.

I would also add that it is not an artificial hybrid at all. The first occurrence was at Leighton Hall in Wales in 1888 where the two species were planted in close proximity to each other and created a completely natural hybrid. The same thing has happened several more times when the two species, which do not share a similar natural range, are planted close to each other.

And as for privacy, you already have a solid board fence that looks to be 5-6 ft tall. For privacy above the fence, plant trees--and not just one species/cultivar. Plant a variety in the 25-35 foot range.

Here you go Zach, It took some digging but I found my pic from 2015. This is from a discussion from that time. Happily this sight is not so common any more around here because nobody plants this freak of a tree. It is way too disease prone.
