What should I do about a tread that doesn't match the floor?

Flooring guy installed this tread up against existing floor. "Trust me, it'll look exactly the same after I put a coat of poly on it." It doesn't, and now that it already has poly on it, I'm wondering how to fix it. Here's my plan:
- Get some chemical stripper and remove the poly from the tread and feather it into the old part since for some reason, he sanded into that part and poly'd it too. He used water based poly even though the old floor probably used oil?
- Then I'll stain it. Oil based golden oak?
- Finally I'll coat it with oil based poly.
Does this sound insane? Any tips? Thank you!
