Saturday's flowers

Even with watering every day, we are beginning to see the effect of the heat and drought. The daylilies are beginning to do what they did last summer. The three petals stay in a tight tube and only the sepals roll back.

We haven't been doing any hybridizing, just looking around the garden, especially to evaluate the seedlings. We have two seedling beds we need to move this fall. Actually, we have three, but we know we won't get that much done.

Just named varieties today--

Buddy's Pinkie

Critical Mass is never very tall, but this clump needs dividing.

Double Blazing Busby is tall for a double.

Extreme Tangerine had its first flower open this season.

I hope Firestone losing its splotchiness.

Forestlake Briar Patch is one of my favorites of the Forestlake ones we grow.

Heavenly Christmas Cactus had its ffo of the season. It has been a bloom machine the last couple of years.

Height of Fashion is a small flower on a pretty tall scape.

Jeepers Creepers was showing a better pattern today.

Nile Princess was a gift. It is a Pierce and we don't usually buy Pierce dayliles. It came through the winter ok, but we shall see.

One Above You--one of the super tall ones.

Piece of the Action has a weird growth pattern. Instead of making a rounded clump, it has grown in a straight line from one side of the bed to the other. When we did it, I suspect it will have some long stolens.

Puffer Fish was supposed to be gone, but evidently, there was a small piece left behind in the bed.

Shabby Chic

Swingin' Miss is one of my favorite small flowers--3.25 inch flowers on decent scapes. Scape height is registered at 22 inches, but they are taller than that here.

I love the color and watermark on Tropical Tease.

I am still liking Jeepers Creepers. And, of course, One Above You-it is yellow! Buddy’s Pinkie is interesting. I am seeing lots of bud drop with my heat and no rain.

A number of cultivars that were clean last year are showing a lot of splotchiness. I suppose the humidity. Briar Patch looks interesting. Pinkie has intriguing form, but I am wary of the Buddy's cultivars. Let me know if you are dividing Christmas Cactus, as it is not readily available except, I suppose, from Gossard.

Jeepers Creepers has a nice pattern and colors I like. Forestlake Briar Patch always seems to look good in your garden. I'm glad Nile Princess came through the winter for you. I've grown it here for several years, and it is one of the better performers of the Pierces. However, the seedlings I gotten from it did not impress.
