stair conversion—can this be done?

I’ve scoured the internet and cannot find a DIY solution, so hopefully someone here knows. The stairs in my house have a left-hand volute ending on the last tread. I want to replace it with a craftsman box newel. Can I keep my handrail and somehow anchor it to the new newel post? The curve is totally throwing me off.
